Freeze Frame - Historic Polar Images, 1845-1982 from the Scott Polar Research Institute (went live 1200 GMT 4 March 2009)

Includes the incredible Herbert Ponting Collection of photos from Captain Scott's final expedition, 1910-12.

And a beautiful photo slideshow with commentary, from the BBC website.

Happened to see it on the BBC Breakfast time this morning over my muesli. It is a terrific collection. Amazing, the quality of Ponting's images.

I saw a wonderful news blurb on BBC about it. I'll have to visit the site with more time.

RF Scott certainly had the greater photographer, but Amundsen was the much greater man - arguably an explorer whose perception and risk assessment capacity amounted to nigh genius level ...

He brought his men back from the Pole even if one of them [Hjalmar Johansen - no relation - though he shares a name with my grandfather] would commit suicide on returning ...

There is an element of madness in this kind of activity which has not dimmed with time - as shown by the more recent exploits of Fiennes ...
