What al*** do you think is owned by the most forum members?

Posted by: JamieL_v2 on 06 February 2010

Considering the probable makeup of forum members, and the albums that are often seen on the 'What are you playing now?' threads, I was wondering what album is owned by the most people on the forum?

I think the likely candidates are:

The Beatles 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band'

Pink Floyd 'Dark Side of the Moon', or maybe

Pink Floyd 'Wish You Were Here', or possibly

Beethoven 'Symphony No.5'

I considered Led Zeppelin, but thought there would be a significant number of members who do not like them, the same I suspect for Miles Davis 'Kind of Blue', where as the above albums seem to have a wide appeal, but I may well be wrong.

I think with the latter it would owning any recording of it, and then the distinction becomes a little blurred. Maybe the consideration is not album, but work of music, which might rank a symphony and a modern album alongside each other.

I would also disregard different releases, remasters, just if you own that piece of music.

Anyway, I am sure that I have missed something really obvious, but those were the ones that came to mind. Any other suggestions?

I guess the bulk of the 'normal' (ie non-naim but audio types) would own that selection but I wonder if there is a recording most owned by only naim users?.....Antonio Forcione for example?

G

PS From that selection DSOTM would be my guess.

I have no Beatles albums, prefer Beethoven's 9th but do own both the Floyd albums.

You may find that Dire Straits - Brothers in arms, Fleetwood Mac - Rumours and Michael Jackson - Thriller appear in many people's collections.

... I think you captured it in your first post.

I suppose I fail on the Naim ownership qualification these days - I have title to a lovely Chrome Edged Hi-cap, serving well in a friend's set of Naim - but I do have the Beethoven mentioned in the first post [four different recordings], as well as DSOTM, which gets an occasional airing.

Well, I own Sgt.Pepper (LP) and Dark side of the moon (CD) and several recordings of Beethovens Fifth. I used to own Wish you were here (LP) but discarded it some years ago.

Does owning 13 different copies of the same album count as 1 or 13?

You know who you are!

Sadly only as 1, but what album is that?

How do you manage 13 copies? Different artworks? Different masters? Robbed an HMV store and still waiting to 'fence' them?

I was explaining to my partner that I own 5 copies of Led Zeppelin IV (vinyl, original CD (Joe Sidore master) that was lost for years, remaster (before I knew what a con it was), remaster in mini LP cover and original (Joe Siddore) to replace the remasters, which lead (quite obviously) to my finding my original CD a little while later. Actually 6 if you count to copy I ripped and burned to a CDR to play in the car.

I have an even more annoying thread to post tomorrow, but I need to do some maths first, otherwise it would not be fair.

I think we all know who that is!

I don't.

Might there be, amongst the many posters, a mathematician with the required skill to write an algorithm to find out? Might be quite easy for someone here?

Though to me such a feat would be near enough witchcraft Smile

Christ Jamie you are making us out to be a bunch of old late middle aged fogeys with that selection. Mind you it is probably true. Smile

If your'e asking for the album that most people 'own' a copy of, I would suggest Meatloaf - Bat Out Of Hell?

Cool

From Wikipedia the top albums worldwide are:-

Michael Jackson Thriller 1982

AC/DC Back in Black 1980
Pink Floyd The Dark Side of the Moon 1973
Meat Loaf Bat out of Hell 1977
Eagles Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975) 1976
Various artists Dirty Dancing 1987
Whitney Houston The Bodyguard 1992
Andrew Lloyd Webber The Phantom of the Opera 1986
Backstreet Boys Millennium 1999
Bee Gees Saturday Night Fever 1977
Fleetwood Mac Rumours 1977

I know not the question the OP set, but should give a guide to what might be "lurking" on their shelves.

FWIW I/We have 6 / 11, of those.

I have all the Beatles elpees as well as the aforementioned Pink Floyd and Beethoven, but I certainly do not own Dire Straits Brothers in arms or Fleetwood Mac Rumours and and am deeply upset that anybody should think I ever would. I do own Thriller though Eek

AC/DC Back in Black 1980 - No
Pink Floyd The Dark Side of the Moon 1973 - Yes
Meat Loaf Bat out of Hell 1977 - No No
Eagles Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975) 1976 No No and thrice No Yuk
Various artists Dirty Dancing 1987 - Never heard of it
Whitney Houston The Bodyguard 1992 - see Eagles
Andrew Lloyd Webber The Phantom of the Opera 1986 - Yes sorry
Backstreet Boys Millennium 1999 - What?
Bee Gees Saturday Night Fever 1977 - Yuk, Yuk and thrice Yuk - I own their good albums though
Fleetwood Mac Rumours 1977 - already said enuff about this elpee: do those who own it ever play it?
Posted on: 07 February 2010 by BigH47
If you own P of The O you have NO right to criticise any one else's record choices. So there! Razz Smile
Posted on: 07 February 2010 by Guido Fawkes
I have Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita and Cats too Roll Eyes

No offence to all the Back Street Boys fans in my earlier posts - I've never really got in to their music myself. I do have quite a few elpees by Various Artists, but genuinely didn't know of the one listed above; Various Artists are still one of my favourite groups though and the variety of their output astonishing.

Seriously I would have thought most forum members would own this

and if they don't they should - essential.

I own two, and had not considered AC/DC 'Back in Black' (really quite excellent album, just ask Barry Took, who encountered it on 'I've never seen Star Wars', and sung out the show to one of the tracks), the two being that and 'Dark Side of the Moon'.

I do own an Eagles album, obviously I don't play it, but must get the one with 'Journey to the Scorcerer' sometime (the theme to 'The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy').

I would not have thought that many members of this forum would have either the Backstreet Boys or the Whitney Houston albums, although a few may well have some albums the latter's (much more talented) aunty.

Wikipedia - biggest selling music artists

Good to see The Beatles atop the above list, together with Elvis.

A Dire Straits album - possibaly "Brothers In Arms"
Posted on: 07 February 2010 by u5227470736789439
I had this until the last six months. Parted with as the Radio still broadcasts the songs as often as I would want to listen to them.

I even used to have Hell Freezes Over [Eagles - can't the lead singer's voice though the band is good], but parted with it for the same reason as Brothers In Arms. I still have Alchemy "Live," which is good value for Sultans Of Swing, IMHO.

On the other hand the Ella count continues to rise ...

I have two of BigH's list.

Only one copy of one and I never play the other.
