A5 cable for 72/140 to Pro-ac Response 1SC?

Posted by: David Quigley on 10 April 2001

Hi, My newly upgraded system is CD3, 72/140 and a pair of Pro-ac Response 1SC's. The only element left to change is speaker cable. I have heard from many that A5 will make Naim sound best, but have also heard that the 1SC's are cable fussy frequently sounding better with Nordost cables than others. Any views on best hierarchy, pro-ac or non-pro-ac specific?

...on your system. My former system was CD3/72/hi-cap/140 feeding Response 2's. The system had a gristle, or edge, to it that never quite went away. My current system does not include any of these components but the gristle in my current system went away when I switched to solid-core speaker wire. Others have success with non-Naim wire, but I believe capacitance is an issue. Search the forum relevant threads and advice.

Hi!

I'm not a lawyer but after a number of experiences quite familiar with guarantee claims. I don't think different speaker cable can affect the guarantee on the amp, as housing is not opened and no interior specs are altered - but perhaps thats different in germany; but as the UK are under the european law authority (I think) the use of a 3rd suppliers cable is not allowed to affect guarantee - would be customer blackmail, would it?
btw I used Linn (K40?), audioquest CV 4 and NACA 5 with my 180 amp - different results but no damage/failure or such thing.
Best regards

...7 plus years each, so I am not sure the warranty is a very big issue here. Also, having read the old threads, it seems that with some minnimun checks on pf's and resistance, safety should not be a huge issue. I am more concerned about getting the best sound out of the system so far than with complying with Naim policy.

Thanks for all the advice so far, clearly this is a thorny issue.

David,

OK, but don't forget that if your amp goes unstable you can kiss your speakers goodbye, too.

Having had trouble with room acoustics I tried different ways to setup the system and different speaker cables. I know that naim recommends NACA 5 in a length of at least 3,5 m. As I have moved my system now to the other side of the room, the speakers now facing the bookshelf (to get rid of the boomy bass), speakers about 1m in front of the wall, the overlenght of NACA 5 annoyed the listeners eye. Having a second pair of A5 with 1,2m length I changed for visual reasons and: no difference. I read about 10m A5 sounding better than 3,5m but to my experience: I cannot hear "lenght" differences. Female listeners might perhaps...

...the 1SCs are MUCH less efficient than the Tablettes. So much so that I would recommend against them with a Nait (tho I've not heard the Nait 5). Did your dealer have the 1SCs hooked to a Nait 5 or the separate box 5 series stuff?

I also have a pair of Response 2's for sale, if you might be interested.

Good question of whether the Nait 5 is better used as a stand-alone amp or a stand-alone pre. I know this was answered on the forum for the Nait 3, but the 5 is a different beast.
