Koetsu Rosewood

Posted by: mmhifi on 16 December 2002

Hi,

Have somebody experience with Koetsu Rosewood on
LP12/Aro and Naim MC boards or Prefix?
I read Koetsu really needs 100ohm input impedance
so can I easily change input impedance of Prefix by soldering resistor in parallel?
And what about geometrical compatibility with Aro?

Rosewood SP (don't know about standard or signature) works fine into K or S stageline and Pre-amp boards. Don't know which is best (K or S) but I would like to find out sometime.

There are some posts on Koetsu geometry vs ARO. Do a search on Koetsu and ARO. I believe ARO wants 8mm stylus to fixing centre, Koetsu is 9.5mm IIRC. People have disagreed whether this is significant or not (surely it must be?). In any case the problem (surely?) can be resolved with a new armboard drilled with the modified overhang.

Moving the arm base isn't 'correct' unless you also change the offset angle of the cartridge mounting.

Lengthening the mounting slots (or getting a custom drilled arm) is the 'proper' solution.

The arm will be designed to have a stylus-pivot distance, an offset angle, and a pivot to record centre distance for minimised overall tracking distortion. If you change one parameter then you affect the other two.

If you simply mount a Koetsu in the drilled holes in your Aro, the alignment will be wrong. What I've had to do it CAREFULLY lengthen the holes in the headshell using a Dremel in order to maintain the correct stylus-to-pivot measurement. I know this may compromise absolute rigidity of your arm/cartridge coupling, but it's better than listening to gross distortion. Do the job carefully, in good light, and without any traces of alcohol in your bloodstream. If in doubt, get a machine shop to do this work for you. One slip and you'll need a new armtube!

Good point about the offset angle. Trouble is, there is no info with a Koetsu at all. I am using an SME arm and the only adjustment is to slide the arm base. I read in the SME manual that if the stylus to fixing centres is not 9.5mm then you need to view the protractor differently during setup, not that there is a problem using the cartridge. Should I have the SME headshell slotted too?

The ARO manual gives a range: 7mm to 10mm, which covers all the cartridges mentioned in this thread. What is missing here?

Can you give me your email address? I have a Koetsu Onyx and don't know what to do. I would be able to drill new holes, but I don't know if that is really worth it. I now use a Troika, which sounds nice, but dirty in comparison to the Koetsu. When I installed the Koetsu, it sounded wonderful, but I could hear horrible distortion as soon as it gets only a little bit louder than Pianissimo. Since the Onyx is s/h: should I have it serviced first? The pre-owner had it retipped by VdH.
