Optimal distance between SBLs
Posted by: Franz K on 24 February 2003
Hallo
I would like to know what distance between SBLs is generally considered optimal ? We are moving to a bigger apartment and I will have enough room to place my system in a separate listening/working room with one big wall against which I plan to place the speakers.
Thanks for advice
Franz

Hi Franz,
can't help you with your enquiry, but it would be nice to drop me a line, I lost your e-mail address.

a combination of the following -
(1) stereo recordings contain clear effect of left and right speakers "talking" to one another.
(3) when you are sitting in front of the speakers, sound is 3 dimensional, with rock solid imagery.
(4) system sounds melodious even when you're not listening in the same room.
in most rooms the tweeter to tweeter distance is within 6 feet. the sbl's driver dispersion patterns are generally the same for all pairs in it's 17 year production run.
please PM me if you need more details.

This is very personal. It really is, what sounds right and looks right to you in the context of your room.
Do not be bound by 'audio rules'.
Fine adjustment can take a while, as an inch either way will make an audible difference.
I run SBL's either side of an open, room dividing arch and prefer a little bit of toe-in; but you may prefer them square to the wall.
FWIW, mine are 1.5 metres apart (inside edges) and I sit 3.5 metres away.
Good luck.

I'm waiting for what I believe to be the last ever pair of Walnut SBL's !....
As I've made the crazy decision of buying them without listening to them first, could anyone let me know the cabinet dimensions I need to make sure they fit in my living room.

Not crazy, and don't worry they are small.
I'd guess 800 mm high.

More like 90 cm. They are really unobtrusive. Like small litter bins. They will sound rubbish only if fed rubbish.

Ajalden,
very good decision indeed!
Sizes are: 885 x 266 x 270 mm (HxWxD)
Enjoy them when they arrive.

Thanks they should fit nicely either side of the fireplace, I should have about 18mm between the side of the fireplace and roughly the same to the TV.
