WNPS Oct 2008

Yesterday, the West Norfolk Phonographic Society re-convened at my house and it seems we all had a good time!

Thanks to everyone who came over along with their music, toys and refreshments, especially the pork pies Mark! (I believe another will be revealing our new emblem later). It was an excellent day.

I was glad other people got to hear the Gurus in a group session, I guess you could see why I bought them.

Thanks to James A. and Tony for bringing over the Powerlines.

We tried the first one on my Hi-Cap and ...wow, what a difference, the whole system just seemed more...well more! Then the TT got one, a difference but in my system not such a huge improvement IMO, (it was replacing another aftermarket cable from vdh but without the mechanical decoupling involved in the naim cable. That said, when the vdh cable replaced the standard one with the TT a few years ago, that itsef was a huge improvement so I guess the bigger difference had already been accomplished) although others I think noticed it more, being more objective than me. Then finally, another on the 180. Blimey. Or b*gger, depending on perspective.

I think JWM summed it up when he said that I seemed really pissed off when we had a PL on the Hi and then really happy with one on the 180 too. That's because with one I thought, "Oh! nuts, I'm going to have to get one of these now." Then with two I thought, "Wow, I'm going to have to get myself a couple of these. They're fantastic!"

Interesting when we tried Mark's 82 in my system after I have had a previously unsuccessful trial a few months back. Still didn't work for me in my system. More hi-fi perhaps but less musical. Don't know why specifically but my 102 wins out in the context of balance. Smile

Like we said, as we all got a bit lost with what was being played and when, here's my stuff that was on:

CD - Judith Owen - Happy this way - played Conway Bay, Painting by Numbers, Nicholas Drake, Sympathy, A Cool Life
Ipod - Laura Marling - Alas I cannot swim - played Ghosts
CD- David Holmes - Holy Pictures - played Holy Pictures
CD - Derek Trucks Band - Songlines - played I Wish I Knew (in the A/B comparisons) and Volunteered Slavery. A lot! (The other CD we didn't play is called Soul Serenade btw).
CD - Luther Allison - Bad News is Coming (Re-master) - Sweet Home Chicago
CD - S.M.V. (Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller, Victor Wooten) - Thunder - played Thunder
CD - Charles Dutoit/Saint-Saens - Organ Symphony
CD - Il Buono, il Brutto, Il Cattivo - L'Estasi Dell'Oro

And the vinyl

James Taylor - Sweet Baby James - Sweet Baby James (Warners Re-Issue)
Dakota Staton - "Europa Jazz" series - Make It Easy on Yourself
Peter Gabriel - 4 - Lay Your Hands On Me (Classic Records re-isue) (Used for A/B)
Shelby Lynne - Just A Little Lovin' - Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield - Dusty In Memphis - Just a Little Lovin' and Breakfast In Bed

Then we went to the pub!

The 'crew'. Some look quite relaxed...

James,

Thank you and Mrs James for a most enjoyable visit to your lovely home, I had great time. Nice to have a chat with all the like minded folk again. Thanks to Mark also for the delicious pork pies. What was that first one again?

My contribution to the music was:

Patty Griffin - Tomorrow Night from 1000 kisses.
David Hughes - Jelly Babe from This Other Eden.
Jim Bryson - Somewhere Else from The North Side Benches. All on CD.

Indeed, a splendid day! Many thanks to James for his great hospitality and to Mark for the lovely pork pies; the best I think I've ever scoffed.

These occasions are really enjoyable and they give us all a chance to talk Hi-Fi with those similarly afflicted as well as being introduced to some great new music. It was nice to meet James from Tom Tom - the poor fella spent a lot of his time swapping over various components, but he seemed to enjoy it...

As if I didn't already know, the Powerline showed what an excellent bit of kit it truly is. Whatever you use it on it brings about a magical improvement to all aspects of the music.

I was very impressed by the Gurus. An amazing performance for such a relatively small speaker! When James was out making the coffee we looked around for the concealed pair of DBLs that were producing such a huge sound. So, where did you hide them you scamp? Big Grin

Once I've finished typing this out it'll be time to considerably enhance Amazon's profits.

Music I contributed -

Bad Company - HDCD Steve Hoffman remaster.
Joe Jackson - Night & Day II "Hell of a Town"
John Mayall - The Blues Alone on SHM-CD, "Marsha's Mood"

On Vinyl - "Rickie Lee Jones"

Now on to more serious matters. After a unanimous agreement it was decided that the society adopt this Logo :-

After a careful search around for any Polar Bears that may have been lurking in the vicinity, we prepared to get outside the pork pies. From the left - JN (John), Jamie Wednesday, GML (George), JWM (James), Michael and Chillkram (Mark)..

...and approximately two seconds later...

I was flattered when James attempted to match my skill and expertise at cable dressing. Not too bad for a first attempt -

What a great day! I had a fantastic time, thank you to J-W for hosting, Mrs J-W and the little J-Ws for putting up with us, Mark for those fantastic pork pies (now we know who ate all the pies...), the boys who brought the other toys, and - I have to add - JN for driving so that I could have a couple of sherberts!

It's really great just to have a day with some other people who understand/share the obsession, relaxing and listening to music, and always being introduced to something new. I particularly enjoyed the Derek Trucks band, which I had never heard before.

From my collection we listened to:

Royksopp - Melody A.M. - In Space (CD)
Modern Jazz Quartet - Pyramid - Django (original mono vinyl)
Toumani Diabate - Mande Variations - Cantelowes (CD)

Great day!

Nice pics Tony

The wiring was perfectly fine before someone started mucking about with PLs..! All better again now...although now I've ordered two powerlines I'll have to have another sort out when they arrive.

Glad you had a good say George. Have to wait for Mark to remind us of the pies provenance but the vacuum packed special was very good and I can see a trip or two up the road to Stamford!

Thanks for your comments James. Yeah I like Derek Trucks too. There are about four other albums (including a live one which is on its way to me from Amazon). You may have to hunt about for the best prices on the earlier ones or get Japanese presses from CDJ or HMV but Songlines is easy to get.

Can I also add my sincere thanks to you Jamie for making us so welcome in your home.

It was a fantastic day spent with fellow Naimees who have over the years become truly wonderful friends.

Your system was really singing its heart out yesterday.. and the addition of the Powerlines transported us all to another level by a wide margin!

Thanks Mark for the pies ...superb... especially enjoyed by the Polar Bear.

I played:-

Light My Fire - The Doors
The Boxer - Simon & Garfunkel
Lay Your Hands on Me - Peter Gabriel (an original first press CD).

Looking forward to the next merry meeting :-)

Sounds like you all had a great day! The powerlines are visiting me the week after next when James (Tom Tom) is visiting for a final check up on my system. Glad you all enjoyed the Gurus mine are warning up really well after a month. Big Grin

I was rather hoping this thread might have been entitled 'Tuesday at Wednesday's'.

Anyway it was a great day - very eye-opening on the effect wrought by the Powerline. I thought it was a magnitude of improvement each time one was introduced, but not only that it was fundamental to the music. I would say it is the essential upgrade for anyone with £400 to spend.

As usual the music selection was excellent and I will be searching to see if it is available on vinyl.

My contribution was just the second side of 'Shades' by J J Cale and the first couple of bars of 'Just a Little Lovin' by Shelby Lynne (unfortunately it turned out to be scratched).

The Gurus were astonishing as ever and James can be proud of the sound he is getting from relatively modest amplification (in comparison to the 500 series anyway!) - especially with the Powerlines in situ.

The pies were purchased from Nelson's Butchers in Stamford (two doors from Stamford Audio) and are baked in house. They have won awards I believe and can be ordered online. Glad you all enjoyed them, but I thought they diappeared a bit quickly - it's clear now that a certain forum member from the North Pole had sneaked in while we weren't looking as he had clearly heard rumour of the pies!

Anyway thanks to everyone for the wonderful company and especially to James for the hospitality.

Tony - the WNPS logo is spot on!

Thanks also to James (Tom Tom) for ensuring I would have to have that difficult conversation about spending £395 when I got home.

Yes indeed Mark - a great (missed) title for the thread.

I was surprised no one had beaten me too it, hence my related thread over in the Hi-Fi Corner.

Jamie Wednesday was good enough to invite us over to his place on Tuesday to sample his Naim system and Guru QM10 loudspeakers.

JWM and ('Tom Tom') James completed the James gang, and the non-James attendees were myself, GML, Michael, Tony Miller and (Mark) 'Chilkram'.

The little Gurus really belie their size, producing powerful and deep bass, and an excellent sound-stage.

We had some of those pesky Powerlines to check out, and I think it's fair to say that the system was transformed with PLs on James' 102/Hi-Cap and the 180. Hot damn! - those things work.

We all enjoyed and discovered some unfamiliar music. I've just ordered The Derek Trucks Band 'Songlines' and SMV 'Thunder' which a a magnificent bass fest by three very fine bass players: Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller and Victor Wooten. Sounded like a decent recording too.

So thanks to Jamie for his fine hospitality and a most enjoyable day.

John.

Likewise, my post from HiFi Corner:-

Hi All,

Indeed a most enjoyable day, great company, great tunes and great pork pies courtesy of Chilkram - well done that pie man, your dedication to sourcing these fine examples went way beyond the normal call of duty.

Mr Wednesday was a most excellent host and gracious thanks to the whole 'WNPS' clan for the invitation and allowing me to darken their door armed and fully loaded with Powerlines.

We said we'd post a track list so here's a start:-

Gary Louris - Vagabonds
Mary Gauthier - Mercy Now

Thanks again.

Cheers,
James
