£2000 for a balanced system?

Posted by: Linds on 25 June 2003

I have:
• Arcam Alpha 9 CD
• Myryad MI-120 Integrated
• Naim Credos

If I were to throw £2,000 in its direction, what would get me the best balanced system?

E.g. If I flogged MI-120 (£300?), and bought 112/150 £1,300, that would eat a grand, and leave a grand to upgrade source? (So sell Alpha 9, and go CD5+FC?)

Couldn't JUST upgrade source as MI-120 is way less controlled than Nait 5 which I demmed.

I would buy 2nd hand, but WAF (not to mention My-AF) rules out olive range I'm afraid...

!!! There's always money somewhere for the next upgrade... !!!

Well after a quick look on loot, there is a second hand 112/150 for 850 pounds, a flatcap 2 for 275, which comes in at 1125, which leaves you enough for a new cd5.

Alternatly, if you can stand the old look, after selling your current amp/cd player this should leave you with 1200 pounds, or only a few hundred short of a second hand CDX.

The older gear I think is more of an aquired taste.
The cd player you have is very capable, I would try it with the 112/150 or Nait 5.
Billy Vee in London are doing a good deal on the 5 series system, see their advert in what hi fi .

Have there been any significant changes to the 112/150 since December 2001?

CD5 on hold then

With Alex95's comment that the Alpha 9 is very capable (which I found when I demmed it with a borrowed Nait 5 at home with my Credo's), my immediate need then has to be to maximise my amplification, without going crackers.

I s'pose I could blitz on 202/150, but that is so "anti-source-first" I'll need my dealer's advice on 112 being a more sensible route!

Watch this space — 112/150 is within reach. If I track down immac. ones second-hand, I've got cash for flatcap and CDs.

Upgrading the source later (beyond CD5?) seems to be an expensive step...
