November music

November so far:

The aforementioned Buck 65, Square is my first exposure to this rapper from Nova Scotia. This 4 track LP isn't an easy listen, but it's quite extraordinary if you give it a chance. The songs are 15 minute collages and have an epic feel; the tracks invoke emotions from belligerence to melancholia. Someone in his crew is probably a classically trained pianist. Not wholly original, as there is a whiff of Del Tha Funkee Homosapien here. At any rate, it appears "Prog Rap" has finally come upon us and Halifax is its epicentre.

The new Sigur Ros AKA, "their new one" is about as pretentious as its booklet. I've only heard it once through, and have no desire to give it another go. I think I'll be trading my tickets for the Theivery Corp show.

If that wasn't bad enough, Hooverphonic presents Jackie Cane is utter, utter crap. It's supposed to recount the career of one Jackie Cane, but who cares; the songs are full of pop cliches and cottage cheese. There must be some kind of irony at work here, but it's certainly beyond me. The only interesting thing here is their new Blo-Pops flute.
This is so awful I don't know what to make of it. I'm thinking of sending an old fashioned letter to Holland demanding my 19.99 back.
Hooversound is over.

David Bowie, Heathen
Lovely album. It's good Bowie, what the hell else is there to say?

Cake Comfort Eagle or, "hey wow, I never knew John McCrea and Dr. Dre were homies". This fusion of West Coast g-funk and alt-rock is hilarious, in a good way. Fun. Probably deserves to be played in the car with friends rather than a nerd's lonely Naim system.

It’s been raining constantly here in the Wild West (or so it seems) so I went a bought these to inject a bit of sunlight into my musical life.

Kirsty MacColl - Tropical Brainstorm

Ah, just was needed. Some Brazilian/Cuban inspired music effortlessly blended with KM’s witty lyrics. It’s a damn good uplifting record! Damn pity she’s not around to make more great music.

Saint Etienne – Finisterre

I haven’t bothered much with these in recent years but this seems a return to form.

David Bowie – Lets Dance

Frowned upon by certain Bowie-philes but I have to admit I just don’t get all that early Ziggy Stardust stuff, being a kid of the 80’s and all that. Modern Love, China Girl and Let’s Dance just have me pumping up the volume with a great big nostalgic smile coming across my face.

Aqualung – Aqualung

OK, not the happiest sounding of records but neither is it the saddest but quite beautiful all the same. Don’t dismiss it just because ‘Strange & Beautiful’ was used on the recent vee-dub-ya advert – it’s a very good album indeed.

Sinead O'Connor: Sean nos - nua. Sinead goes all folkie on a CD of traditional songs with some interesting arrangements, helped in no small part by Donal Lunny who is one of the best producers of Irish music. This is really good, if you like folk. The liner notes are trademark "O'Connor pretentious bollocks" though.

Oysterband: Rise Above. Oysterband doing what they do best. Well crafted, well played, well produced folk rock. Only a miserly 40 minutes though.

cheers

Great call on Buck65. Vertex and Man Overboard are his best releases, IMO. If you ever get the chance to see him live, don't miss it. I saw him in Brighton earlier in the year, and he is a real showman. He interspersed his performance with stories, and most incredibly, simultaneous beat juggling and rapping!

If you enjoy Buck, you should have a listen to 'Personal Journals' by Sage France or 'Bottle of Humans' by Sole.

I've just grabbed Mecca and The Soul Brother by Pete Rock and CL Smooth, having never got round to picking it up when it was released.

Sigur Ros '() - Spoken about elsewhere, beautiful, haunting or dull - depending on who you are!

Martin Grech 'Open Heart Zoo' - From Volvo advert to Radiohead-a-like. Musically very interesting, but his Thom York/Coldplay whinyness finally got to me.

Procul Harum 'Broken Barricades' - Finally a re-release (on www.repertoir.de) of the hippy, trippy 'Robin Trower' album. Lovely re-creation of the cover too. Brookers voice is wonderful, the lyrics obscure.

Tori Amos - 'Scarlet's walk' - On first hearing 'Girl singing undefined songs with too many words' - I feel this about all her albums at first. Now I'm getting into it more. It improves with time and towards the end.

Peter Gabriel - 'Up'. His best since 4 IMHO.

Porcupine Tree - 'In Absentia'. Their best ever IMHO. The last track is lovely. Not as heavy as the first track implies.

1 Giant Leap - '1 Giant Leap'. The more I listen to this the more I like it. Great guest vocals - even Robbie Williams doesn't grate. The best album Peter Gabriel never made.

Granada - 'Takes a Lot of Walking'. Beautiful songs from the Swedish band with hints of Prefab Sprout, American Music Club and others. Lovely.

FSOL - 'Present Amorphous Androgynous: The Isness'
Again, a grower. They even sample Gong - what more could anyone want? Contains the worst singing on any record ever released - unless anyone wants to chime in with another contender?

Regards

Stephen

Mekon, it looks like the Anticon label is worth searching for. I'll ignore that Sole sorta looks like that Badly Drawn Boy smile

Stevie Dee, your formatting is impeccable

If you like anticon stuff, a label you should definitely check out is Mush, as they've put anticon's stuff out before, and have a bunch of similar artists. There's a great Mush sampler called 'Mush Filmstrip (Frame 1)'. Their stuff is available to order from www.dirtyloop.com .

BTW, your setup page is great. Nice to see a fellow Dr Octagon fan. Have you listened to any of his subsequent stuff?

I've got Black Elvis and Dr. Doom, but they're not as strong as The Octagynecologist, IMHO.

I guess The Spankmaster is next... smile
