I thought this was completely bogus?

I think you'll find Elena addresses that question in the afternote. There is a mass of film available on the site from a variety of sources, it would be hard to dispute the central argument, that the full impact of the Chernobyl distaster has been withheld from the public arena for the last 21 years.

At a point in history where there is in all probability going to be a big push towards nuclear power worldwide, should we not be allowed to know the full extent of the downside to the industry, and do we not want to be assured that the lessons of past disasters have been learned, by both the industy & politicians ?

Dear David,

"Nuance lost in translation alert."

Lost on some, I suspect may be truer! The context makes it clear...

Kindest regards from Fredrik

Even if it is, and I doubt it, the story, sentiments and photos are still very real.

Nature will reclaim the land and clean it for us in another 100 years. Then who knows what will happen.

In 100 years? I doubt it. The areas that had fall out over the UK will still not be 'clean' in 100 years.

In a way, Elena's page is a bogus. She HAS been to Chernobyl, but not on a motorcycle by herself instead she went on a guided tour that anyone can go on. Two friends of mine where there last summer Tour to Chernobyl (sorry, it's in Swedish). They asked the guide about Elena and he actually remembered her because she was wearing very warm motorcycle clothes!

B.t.w. the radiation you pick up during a couple of hours in Chernobyl is no more than that during a transatlantic flight.

And this proves what exactly ?

Proves what?

Not sure what you mean.

It's another example of someone who builds a false representation of him/herself as some sort of fearless seeker after truth when the reality appears to be more mundane - if not, frankly, a lie.

What qualifications does this person have that we should believe anything she says, given that her story might well be just that - fiction?

Yeah, nuclear is BAD - or is it?

Hey Nige

why not go tour the area surrounding Pripyat, go take a look at Chernobyl, and report back. Then at least you can make an informed report, rather than picking over someone elses webpage, and posturing on a forum.

Let us know when you've been - I know your pics will be better, and I trust your ability to write with accuracy. I'd really like to hear your views once you've been.

cheers

What purpose could that possibly serve? I've read enough about Cherobyl written by exeprts whose opinions I value far more than some self-serving blogger of dubious veracity.

Also, I hardly think you are in a position to lecture anyone about "posturing".

Nuclear power plants don't kill people; people kill people... Roll Eyes

Rico, get your hands out of your pockets, stand up straight, suck your stomach in. Also, try walking around the house with a book on your head.

Right you are guv. I'll head to the surgeons tomorrow, enquire about some of that fusion surgery then...

well for a start, Nigel, we might get some bloody good photos out of it. You might strike it lucky and get an interview with Elena. And we might be treated to some soundbites. it's the dubious veracity bit I just don't get. perhaps it's that good old open mind that folks don't think exist on this forum.
