Squeezebox Touch

Dear All
Has anyone on here got a Squeezebox Touch yet and care to share with us how it sounds plugged in to a Naim set-up? .....and how it works with a NDAC would be particularly interesting!

Hmmm...I already are on a better one...I like the CD5XS/nDAC much more than CDX2.2.
But I am still thinking...DAMN...

Thorsten:
Which one would you prefer:
1. Squeezebox into the Supernait DAC?
2. Squeezebox into the Naim DAC and played through the Nait XS?

Because the DAC of the N-DAC is much better than the build in of the SN, i think the combination SB>N-DAC<XS is better than SB>SN-DAC.

Why into the XS....I have no XS...
But I am with themrock, for sure.
What the nDAC does is pure magic, nothing less.

Should I buy the Touch too...still not decided...
If you like and are familiar with the Squeezebox platform, the Touch sounds much better than the previous Squeezeboxes, I speculate almost as good as the Transporter when played through the nDAC.
Lots of bugs to iron out though. And the small screen makes it hard to see song names from across the living room.

Re-encoding files as FLAC level 0, as stated by GlenW, has resolved my issues with 24/96 files. I have not reconfigured anything else in Squeezebox Server.
I agree with JYOW that the display is a little too hard to read. I use an Ipod Touch for control and only use the SB display for Album Art. It does this well, especially if you have gatefold sleeve artwork.
I also use a SB3 in a second system where it works well. When I got my SBTouch (mainly for background music and iplayer) I hooked it up to my main system and was very pleased with the sound. Much better than the SB3 and very good for the money.
While I am not ready to ditch my CD player just yet I will certainly be seeking to audition the naim Dac.
I would also hope that any Naim Streamer could be easily pointed to my music folder without any fuss.
Best wishes
Andy

There's an in depth review of the Touch by Chris Connaker over at CA. This is the first proper review I have read on it. Despite reservations about overall sound quality, he rates it highly.

Nice review but the comparison to the DAC's SPdif was a bit unfair IMO. That company's DACs have been far better via their 1394 than their SPdif even though they do now upsample/reclock. A different DAC, more optimized for SPdif, may have got a different result of 1394 vs ethernet interface. Interseting that he's confirmed bit perfect yet speaks about differences in sound. Used to be a alternate concensus on that board and it's devotees. Nice to see things moving forward. He also only used the device wirelessly. Still bit perfect but different protocols and processing that may have an effect.

I would only look at Chris' set up and functions review.
Chris' audio engineering skills is nil, and his listening credentials and preferences were never disclosed.
My impression of him is just a person who prefers very expensive gears with a lot of vendors liking him for not saying bad things about them, and for his diplomatic style.
If you read his "reviews", all he does mostly is describing the outlook and function of the product, and quote the vendors' manual/press releases.
A very nice guy though.

Frank.
I can second your opinion of the Aune. Tomorrow I too will receive a Squeezebox Touch. My wireless signal also has to travel through two rather thick walls, so I may end up cabling the Touch to avoid rebuffering. I had this problem with 24 bit Flac files on the Duet receiver when the wireless signal was too weak. When I moved the Duet receiver and got a better signal the intermittent rebuffering disappeared.
Best wishes,
Peter

But the Duet didn't play the full 24/96 - it was reduced to 24/48 in the Squeezebox Server - half the data. These always played fine wireless for me when I had a Duet but I encountered very minor buffering issues with the ST playing the full 24/96. An ethernet cable completely cured it though.

Well, for the money, I couldn't resist it so with appologies to Rod Stuart "We are Streaming".
I tried it with computer input via the wireless network using i-tunes and the ST alone good.
Then I put in an an Aune DAC using coax SPDIF. The external dac is way ahead in quality, the music is very fine indeed. The only problems are that the network signal had to pass through 2 walls that are 2 feet thick so a little fiddling with position will solve that. Excellent vfm,
FF
Frank,
It's encouraging that the Aune might provide a low-cost improvement on the analogue outputs of the Touch. Does the Aune play 24/96 stuff?

A fascinating develoment Frank.
Glad you are still finding the aune DAC to be fine. I thought in your system, and as you know its is the greater part of my replay system - with headphones and a PC delivery iTunes.
I have completely settled to it, so I am pleased to read that it is proving versatile as well.

Frank
Try the analogue output of the Touch again after a week. The Touch does to take a while to run in.
Mine improved significantly.
