Intro 2's and the 16p Tweak

Posted by: Ron Brinsdon on 19 November 2002

Have had new kit for about 2 months now (CD5/112/150/Intros) and am still enjoying it and rediscovering my collection. Anyway, last night I tried the "2p under each spike" test that I found in a forum search on "Intros"

Speakers are 3" from rear wall on deep pile carpet
over underlay on wooden sprung floor. Spikes were previously touching boards but not whacked in too hard.

The improvement in bass tightness and general clarity was so noticeable I had to do the experiment several times to make sure it was not an audio case of the "Emperors new clothes" - it worked every time.

My queries are:-

1. Why the change? It is possible that the carpet pile was previously touching the base of the speakers although only very lightly. Now the base is clear of the carpet - is this why they sound better?

If this improvement can be had for 16p, could forum members recommend, based on experience, reasonably priced "spike bases" or "feet" etc that would bring even greater benefits?

I was well pleased the system before and am now even happier.

Thanks to the original topic poster
and thanks for listening.

Ron

How do you get the 2p coins under your deep pile carpet?

Like most 'tweaks' this doesn't work either. Does manage to de-focus the sound tho' so if warm and woolly is your bag....

I went for a 60p version (5p's under the kanII stands and under a Sound Organisation table). I've got bare floorboards, and I hadn't realised how deeply the spikes had dug in. Definitely more 'punchy' bass. Along with the 'psuedo-hydra' Multiway plug that I replaced a 4way extension with, I've had a cheap and successful day of tweaking.

It's a single oversized plug that accepts upto four mains leads. Consequently, if you were using a 4way extension, you now only have the one fuse, where before you had two, and you are rid of the RF noise creating light. They sell them at Maplin for £6.99, and I think you can order them online. If you do a search fro 'grahams hydras', you'll find a bunch of threads on the subject.
