I hope I've gopt this right - I haven't seen a pair of Mk1 stands for 18 or 19 years! (I own a pair of Mk II stands):
The easiest way to tell is that with Mk II stands all four uprights are vertical, while with Mk 1 stands the front two are slanted. Also, the Mk II stand has a footprint that extends far beyond the square formed by the uprights, while Mk 1's does not. Also, I seem to think Mk 1 stands don't have speaker spikes but I'm unsure.

Yup
The other big difference is that Mk 1 stands have a square open frame at the top.
Mk II's have a flat steel plate with upward facing spikes.

Mathew,
I have a pair of Kan1 stands. If you need these let me know.
They are yours-if you pay for the shipping.
