Naim and BlueRay or HD?

Posted by: Yetizone on 28 December 2007

Hi folks,

I'm starting to do a little research into the new hi definition av formats (BlueRay and HD) and as yet I am still a little confused as to which one is considered the best choice.

Does anyone know which of the new high definition formats are winning out in the market place or is it way too early to tell?

What have you all committed to?

Has Naim actually committed to a format as yet?

Any thoughts welcome, cheers.

Yes, thanks for that Neil, a very useful link! I looked at it last week & I was surprised how many Blu-Ray discs are region free anyway.

I've already ordered a U.S. copy of "Fifth Element" from Amazon.com.

Reading this thread with great interest. Can someone comment on the sound quality out from the EP35 via stereo RCA DIN plugs? I would want to run the machine via a hiline into my normal Naim hifi system for sound.

in term of support from the film production, the Blue ray format is on the wining path (I think).

Hi Tuan,

The format war ended last Friday at approx 6:48 EST. You'll be glad to know that Blu-ray won.

Unfortunately it's not that simple for Blu-Ray at the moment, but it appears the majority of American Blu-Ray discs aren't region coded anyway.

You can make some of the players multi-region but only for SD DVD.

Ah, the Format war ... I'm missing it already Frown.

I'm thinking about forming a re-creation society. We could meet up at weekends, play our old HD-DVD collections and get all misty-eyed about the past.

Not counting the DVD drives in various computers I've accumulated five DVD players.

I should get rid of a couple, but I get so attached to them...

Tony,

You could join Neil and me in our re-creation society and constantly remind us how your last minute intervention was the deciding factor in the format war. You could be our token Yank Winker

Where's that white feather?

I've got splinters in my rear end from that fence post - but I haven't fallen off yet!

Yes Tony, I'm sure it was. And with that title you were probably fighting them on the beaches!

I think Naim's got it right moving into the install/multi-room audio, digital audio format market just now. They can make a good market there and I think the NaimNet stuff looks seriously good.

If they were to bring out a HD/Blu player etc, could just burn money...

Neat line of thought Roy.

Buy a PS3 and enjoy the quality now.

Just watched Close Encounters Of The Third Kind on Blueray. Great sound.

Have you got your PS3 connected to your Naim equipment?

If you have, what is it hooked up to Mr D?
