Rabih Abou-Khalil

Saw this fellow in concert friday at Crest.Jazz.Vocal festival in Crest in the Drome, France. He had a 5 piece band, Oud, Drums, Tuba, accordeon & Clarinet. This group really swings big time. I can highly recommend.

The question is which album of his to start with, the new one, 'Il Sospiro' is solo Oud, I'd like a recording that has the same or similiar line up to the group I saw. Any suggestions ?

He's made a whole series on the Enja label - from memory including:

The Sultan's Picnic
Arabian Waltz
Tarab
(damn, can't remember any more - new one is The Cactus of Knowledge which I haven't yet heard but sounds very Castaneda...)

They all have rather attractive digipak-type cases with lots of stylized Islamic calligraphy etc.

I've got most of these and IMHO they're all pretty good (and all with a small group rather than solo)

I'm extremely envious that you caught him live.

Thanks, It was bit of a fluke really, I went to see Erik Truffaz, who was good, but RAK was top ofthe bill, which surprised me, andhe's really very good in concert.

Just do what my Ozzie friends do, take a february break in France, then you could tour the dozens of jazz/blues festivals that they have!

Dont forgett the best of him 'Blue Camel'. Really worth to listen to.

Some others are 'Yara', 'Between Dusk and Down' and 'Bukra'. He actually released (2002) a new record called 'Il Sospiro' which I didnt heard so far.
Go and listen to him live. He's one of the best performer I ever listen to.

Cheers,
Hermann
