Neighbors playing music in garden all day.

Posted by: matt303 on 14 June 2009

I'm so glad the people next door but one have invested in some garden speakers so they can share hit's of the 80's, football and local commercial radio with everyone in the road. Every summer weekend it starts in the morning and carries on all day even if there isn't anyone in the garden. To make things more fun next door have joined in with a different style of music, it's a right mash-up out there at the moment.

... end of rant.

Death is too good for these kinds of people.

Suggest to the performing rights people that these people are broadcasting the music to the public and ask the PR people to ensure that a licence has been bought for such a purpose.

Have you spoken to them Matt?
If not have a friendly chat with & politely explain the problems they are causing you.

If that doesn't work talk to the environmental health dept of your local authority.
Noise pollution is anti-social behaviour,
so if the neighbours can't get their act together the council should take care of them.

I think it might be one of the Ashes to Ashes sound track CDs, they are now on at least the 3rd play of it.

I'm not sure this is the sort of family that take kindly to polite words, I've caught them putting their rubbish in other peoples bins a couple of times on bin collection day.

I've suffered from problem neighbours before, so I can understand your concerns Matt.
If you talk to them you might be pleasantly surprised, but equally you might get a mouthful of abuse & perhaps worse.

Do you have any friendly neighbours who share your dislike of the noise?
If so ask them if they will come with you to talk to these people (much harder to be unpleasant to two or more people).

However if you think talking to them will most likely result in more problems I would go direct to environmental health.
Most local authorities have a 24 hr anti-social behaviour team,
& I'll think you'll find you can remain anonymous if you (quite reasonably) fear retribution from this family.

Good luck & let us know how you get on.

Get the hosepipe out and make it "rain" in their garden. Winker

You can have too much of a good thing.

If they fail to respond to the the sensible suggestions mentioned get some B&W or Tannoy garden speakers. Give them a wee blast of what your Naim system is capable of. Play Wagner's Ring cycle, John Coltrane's Love Supreme and some Tibetan monk chants (You can have my Lp of it if you want).

The American military have used music as a form of torture. E.g. repeatedly playing heavy rock outside the Vatican embassy in Panama when General Noriega was holed up inside there.

Play foreign language radio (the news in Arabic, Cantonese or Hindi) at full blast or a message addressed to them (nuclear attack imminent) recorded by you.

One of the increasing problems with all these new style housing estates is that people are living in ever closer proximity to each other, coupled with louder stereo systems/sound-docks & a selfish attitude. New houses (on estates) tend to have miniscule gardens which border several other houses, thus increasing the chance that at least one of your close neighbours may have little regard for others.

We have just sold our house (fingers crossed time!) & live on an estate of only 25 houses, but even that is enough to put me off EVER buying a house on an estate again. And our garden is twice the size of some of the newest housing developments gardens.
Too many people, too close by = too many chances of things to go wrong.
If the neighbours don't listen/respond to your "could you turn it down a bit" requests, you are probably in for a long hard slog to get things to change. It may get to the point where every weekend you hope it rains, 'cos otherwise the noisy neighbours will be having yet another party/bbq/noise-fest, & thats no way to live your life.
Yes, I do have my hifi loud-ish sometimes, but I ALWAYS make sure windows & doors are closed first. Why don't others think like that?
You have my sympathies.
Matt.

I can recommend playing the Stooges "Fun House" with the volume turned to 11, opening the windows and setting the CD player to repeat, and going out for most of the day. That killed off a nuaseating teenage party next door last year . After endless Coldplay and Keane I was suicidal.

If Iggy doesn't work I recommend the soundtrack to "La Cage aux Folles" set to repeat,

Well the music stopped after about the forth play, unfortunatly the people renting next door turn their garden into a childrens play centre at the weekends. So it's now loud music and screaming children for the rest of the day. It was so much quieter when I bought this house 3 years ago. Maybe I should sell up and go back to renting, at least it's easier to move on.

Matt ,
Only one thing can stop your neighbors .

One upshot of this is I don't feel much guilt at the moment from giving the SCM11s some welly, just had the XS up to 12 o'clock.

Timmy Mallet's ' Itsy witsy teeny weeny polka dot bikini' on repeat aimed at the neighbours from hell may do it

Matt, I can give you lots of empathy...

Somedays i have the same problem with my neighbours. They do spend a lot of time just slobbing around out their back garden, frequent bbq's with a tribe of family members with children screaming, loud banter, smell of cigarette smoke and burning mad cow burgers, and on sunny days their radio goes on at 8am for unwanted public service broadcast until gone 9pm.

Although i suppose it's fair enough for people to enjoy a good time in the confines of ones garden, but when done to excess and too often it gets very tiresome, especially when on night-shift and there is a real need to get some sleep during the day.

It also amazes me how loud lawnmowers are!
Years ago I read that in many countries they need to be below a certain decibel. But not so in the UK, here it would seem that neighbours compete to see who has the loudest. This would explain why neighbourhood lawn mowing is never done simultaneously; as soon as one lawn mower stops… another one starts up!
Is this a Masonic and synchronized sport for boys i wonder? Roll Eyes

Unfortunately, not if the council prosecute and it goes to court (speaking from experience).

Do people realise that if they complain about their noisy next door neighbours that they are obliged to factor this in (by law) when it comes to selling their own property, thus de-valuing their own home.

There are EU regulations on the noise that lawnmowers can make.
However making it apply to a machine once it was out of the shop would be another issue.

I am a noisy neighbour 'cos at times I like to play music REALLY LOUD.
Fortunately, there is only one set of neighbours within disturbing distance. Soon after we moved in they came round one weekday afternoon and politely said the noise was disturbing them. I apologised, and said I would turn it down. As I couldn't always know when they were going to be in, I asked them to complain immediately on any future occasions when they found the music disturbing.
As a result we have rubbed along rather well for the past 15 years. They come to ask me to turn it down about once a year, and assure me they have not been disturbed on any other occasions. The rest of the time I don't have to keep worrying that I might bothering them when listening to my music.
I'd suggest reasoning with the likes of me.

Yesterday my next door neighbour (flat) asked me to turn the volume up. I will definitely vet the next request for any hint of sarcasm.

PS I was sitting in her flat playing poker at the time.
