N-vi and Hd-dvd player

have a hde1 hd-dvd player plugged into my n-vi via optical connection, when i playback any hd disc it only ever shows dts 321 on the display, i can;t select dd 5-1 even if the disc has no dts soundtrack, this does not make any sence to me, any ideas ?

if my memory serves me right dts is the only output on optical as the player re-processes any signal to dts albeit at a much higher bitrate 1.5mbs. dd+ and ddtruhd are only available thru the hdmi on the hde1 .

regards

neil, thanks for the reply, i had a look on the av-forums and the threads on there say the same as you, just wasn't sure if it was correct

Hang on, I don't think DTS is the only surround output option. I believe you can choose DD5.1 if you must. However, the default is to use the TruHD soundtrack. If you switch on optical output it must re-process the TruHD soundtrack to DTS since it's not allowed to transfer the high quality stream.

frank, there is no option for dd5.1 only option i get is dts 3.2.1. via optical ?

Hmm, ah well. DTS is better than DD so what's the problem? Seriously, I think the HDE-1 is convertting the TruHD streams for you which is a preferable solution to DD5.1.
