I've just discovered Lambchop

Posted by: Bruce Woodhouse on 30 September 2003

Borrowed 'Nixon' from a mate and have spent the weekend wrapped in its sweeping tunes and gothic lyrics. Reminds me of a combination of Prefab Sprout and Luke Haines (but American!) A band I seem to have missed out on before now.

Their back catalogue gems and disasters anybody?

Their latest album "Is a Woman" is excellent. The best of the three Lambchop albums I have. (Yes I have Nixon.)

Enjoy,
Deon

Their best album is What Another Man Spills. Its essential 'Chop. If you like it, try the East River Pipe album The Gasoline Age, which is a onetime Chop member's band and even shares a song with What Another Man Spills (but delivered very differently).

I remember this getting a very good review a while ago but I couldn't find it anywhere at the time.(I may have only been buying vinyl at the time).

Having said that I'm not keen on 'Is a Woman' (partialy due to the bloated Bass, though the piano is superbly recorded.)

This is a Suprise Bruce as you seem to be quite active on this forum and Lambchop have probably had as many forum inches as anyone over the past couple of years.

Buy 'Is a Woman' on vinyl for any number of reasons, not least the fact that the free CD that comes with it is excellent.

Thanks a lot. I'd heard of Lambchop but not from.

"a real critical breakthough"

or overdue praise from the music press suddenly waking up to what a great band they are?
Nixon is great, but is it really THAT great? Perhaps its just me and the order I have purchased their albums.

Cheers

I saw them at York Opera House on the Is a Woman tour, and they were so amazing! The show started so quietly and the sound was superb, even right at the back. Suddenly the band started to swell and you could feel the tension building in the room as this fucking crecendo let rip! Spine tingling, hair on back of neck magic!

I was lucky enough to meet some of the band at a festival in Spain (we were doing a gig the same day). Our road crew had to rise very early the next day to travel to the airport with all our gear, only to find the mighty 'Chop on the same bus to the airport. Our crew are big Lamchop fans and were a bit star-struck, but eventually got chatting and even posed for a few photo's! Not long after, Is a Woman was released, and Kurt sings a verse about travelling with the road crew from Embrace! A proud moment, indeed.

If you get the chance to see em live, go for it, but be warned they sometimes gig with a much reduced line-up. At the festival in Spain, they were down to five members, and two of those were bass players!

Is a woman is beautiful. The juxtaposition of sweetness and swearing is surprisingly poignant.

I'm also intrigued by "Chester" = Kurt Wagner + Josh Rouse. I still haven't managed to get a copy. Should I don my suit of armor and set off in search of one ?
