Too old to Prefix, too young to retire

Posted by: Adolfo Aguiar on 12 November 2001

My LP12, Ittok LVII and Karma are about 17 years old. I intended to get a Prefix but the dealer said the LP12 should have gussets (wood internal bracing).
Prefix owners, any alternatives?

This shouldn't stop you from purchasing a prefix. You could buy a new plinth - this would have the corner braces. Does yours have the hot-glued subchassis, and laminated armboard? If not, it might be worth considering a Cirkus kit (which contains the above, plus springs, nuts, grommets, a new belt, and the cirkus bearing.

I guess he might have been suggesting that your LP12 should be in tip-top shape before adding a high-res phono stage?

An LP12 is never too old. Give your dealer a sound thrashing with a michaeljackson LP - perhaps he'll come to his senses. cool

I was exactly in same situation. I had LP12 from 1983 and needed phonostage. Dealer suggested to do DIY construction to fit Prefix and so we did.
Some time my Ittok LVII/Klyde/Prefix K/Hicap sounded terrific but soon DIY construction loosened and sound gone away. It took for me 1 year to understand this thing is THE reason of bad sound! After that I had two choices: to buy new plinth or another phonostage. I bought Microgroove+ and it's fabulous.

I bought mine through Walrus Systems, waited 2 weeks for delivery and there were absolutely no problems with reliability. It takes month for full break-up(with signal!) and sounds like nothing I heard before. Beware, there is no line preamplifier in the world that doesn't worsen sound of this unit(naimists, please, don't kill me!).

Thanks for this clarification. Does the manufacturer offer a full 30 day warranty then?

Sorry, couldn't resist.
