Very old 250 vs new 180

Posted by: Justin on 10 July 2001

Hi,

I've been told that updating an early 80's vintage 250 with new caps and what-not will bring it up to early 80's spec, but that it will not be the equal of a current production 250. However, will a fully serviced early 80's vintage 250 better a current spec 180 while driving SBL's. Thanks for all those who can help.

My experience in making this decision is now about 5 years old. I listened to an old 250 (mid-80s newly recapped/serviced) versus a new 180 and bought the 250. I was driving SBLs and found the 250 providing much more natural sound, more/better bass, and in much better control than the 180.

I would think that a, roughly, 20 year old 250 might well cost less than a new 180 so I would consider it a potential bargain.
Good Luck!

Go for the 250, if it has been serviced properly (by NANA or a trustable Naim dealer). After 85 250's are close to new ones.
