Is it too early to start an "Al*** of the Year" thread?

I see nobody has mentioned Kraftwerk yet.

I was listening to it in the car today, and cannot remember anything about it. Not thier best work by a long chalk.

From the previous posts tones, perhaps we need a sub thread - "most over-hyped, purchased and found wanting records of the year"

On a positive note, I really enjoyed listening to Various Artists - Schaffelfieber 2. This has been in the CD player more than any other one this year. If only I could find a seller of Schaffelfieber 1 Frown

In addition to others mentioned:

Mosquitos- S/T (airy indie bossa nova poppy stuff; does the spring breeze and field of fresh flowers thing for me)
Po' Girl- S/T*
Drive-By Truckers- Decoration Day*

While you're there Nick- I recently picked up Midival Punditz. Excellent. I liked Karsh Kale live, but the album leaves me wanting the perfection of their live show. Nitin Sawhney's "Beyond Skin" is on order (and its price has doubled on Amazon since Eek).

You all realise of course we are going to have to do this again in 6 weeks time. Those of you who have shot your bolt with a full list are going to regret it then.

no one has mentioned the new blur album which I thought rather good. A vote for Think Tank then.

Why do the 'Tad Wankys' on this forum insist on calling that Wire album by its cliquey vinyl mail-order name 'PF456 Redux'? It's known to most of us (and anyone who wants to go into HMV to buy it) as 'Send'.

Apart from this excellent bit of work and one or two other things, this year has been mostly characterised by protopunk/garage/wannabes who think it's 1975. Or in the White Stripes' case 1952. Harumph.

Can I nominate the Cheeky Girls?

As it happpens, the vinyl version is different from the CD, and PF456 Redux is its title.

Hmmm - interesting. I have both. What's the difference?
Posted on: 05 November 2003 by sideshowbob
I have them both as well. As Tad Wanky of Wire says on their website:

quote:

There is a limited edition vinyl album available entitled PF456 Redux (pf456redux) (FORMERLY VPF6) which, in true Wire fashion, is an entirely separate item. In the sprit of a polar opposite to the traditional "DJ friendly triple vinyl" concept the vinyl version of "send" is all the material from the CD release of "send" plus all of the other tracks from "read & burn 01 & 02" edited to their barest essentials.

The one I keep playing most is by Sleepy Jackson so I guess that counts - '1' by Simple Kid runs it a close 2nd

I'll be catching their show next week, and was hoping to pick up the new one on vinyl. You've got me a little worried. I have 'Oh, Inverted World' on blue vinyl and must admit it's a pretty poor pressing - noisy and with a skip - arrgh.
cheers,

Massive Attack - well, yeah - wish I'd not wasted the extra on the vinyl - though there is one bonus paint-drying track on there... The Darkness though - c'mon, it's all a bit of fun! Ditto Electric Six Smile

Uh oh - hope it's not as bad as their last one - found it really boring. Ditto the Thrills - what's all the fuss about with them?

Radiohead, Fluke, Blur....

Cool - agree with the first and last - but what are Fluke like these days? I only have "Atom bomb" but am curious to hear more...

My choice so far would be _Belle and Sebastian_ though.

What's this like? I've only heard a couple of old ones of theirs but they were great?

It's been a great year for albums.
Oh...there's Strays - Janes Addiction, Zwan at the beginning of the year, The Thrills, the Led Zep thing....but my vote by miles must be Lisa Marie Presley's album, and if you haven't checked it out you are seriously missing something great.
But there is still more to come with Pearl Jam releasing a cd of early sessions and a DVD in a few days, and a Temple of the Dog best of too. Its not over yet! Smile

Alex,

You are right.

Alex - looks like I'll be getting the Belle & Sebastian too then I think.

Matthew - forgot to say thanks for recommending The Notwist's Neon Golden. Its exceptionally good. But then you already know that.

Cheers

Simon -- Glad you liked it.

And whilst we are in thank you mood a quick shout to Ludwig for the Po Girl tip. I like it a lot -- kind of like M. Ward was a girl and went all Lesbitarian/Lilith Fair.

I'm glad you like it. It's regularly in my rotation.

But the Shins, that's like so last week <huffs>. Roll Eyes

Jeez

Must be something else surely..Or has it really been another nothing year?

(BTW I strongly suggest you don't punch Po Girls into Google if you have impressionable young minds around)

I can see where you're coming from with that line of thought Nick. Does seem a tad contradictory dunnit?

Maybe it's a biorhythm thing? Maybe I'm just trying to stir it up again. Maybe I'd better change the subject........

Anyone see the moon the other night?

Err Actually I was referring to the eclipse Nick.

Yep. Spent about an hour or so going from watching the Nashville Music Awards on TV to dashing outside to see how far it had progressed. The dogs must have thought I'd got cystitis. Great, wasn't it.

Anyway, back to topic and before it becomes fashionable to scorn it, I have to add Johnny Cash's "American IV; The Man Comes Around". A truly remarkable album. The track "Hurt", which is the 1st single off the album hit me in the same way as Iggy Pop/Death in Vegas' "Aisha".

David, try www.smallfish.co.uk - it's listed at £11.99

As for me no one album stands out, but The Notwist 'Neon Golden' is as good as anything else.

You're welcome Alex - I just wish I could afford to buy as much as David does (but don't we all)...

Oh, and David, I noticed in another thread that you've got the cd via ebay after all. Hope it wasn't expensive!

cheers
