sbl's minimum power requirements

Posted by: thomas on 28 April 2003

I've seen some second hand sbl's come up for sale from time to time & was wondering if my system would be capable of driving them properly (cd3.5, 2 flatcaps, 90/92)
My current speakers, little jm lab boxes do sound a little 'boxey', funnily enough.
Any advice please would be appreciated, thanx.

Hi Thomas,

I seem to recall the SBL product page stating a NAP140 being the minimum for SBLs. Having said that, source first seems to be the best way of getting the most music out of what you have. SBL's in your system at present would equate to a reasonable mullet as well Wink
Try them and see - you may like what you hear.

Hi Thomas,

Go for it, you would not regret. I used to power the SBL by CD3.5+Hi-cap/92+Flat-cap/90X2/Snaxo-2-4, they made such a difference to intro.

I also noticed last week, someone assembled the SBL for me after moving, I was using intro with CDSII/XPS/82+Hi-cap/250 for a month or so, what a difference.

cheers

Made the mistake of trying my SBLs on the end of my 2nd system CD2/Nait in lieu of my Royd RR1s and the sounded absolutely superb. They were driven well by the NAIT2 and went loud enough for all but the most ardent Ramstein fans

Anyone for a used pair of RR1s?

In a smaller room SBL's will give great results on the end of a NAIT.
I had the opportunity to compare my 135's to a NAIT 2 ,its not that the 135's sounded bad but the little NAIT gave truly musical results at humane listening levels. I would never trade off my 135s but your NAP90 is a great starting piont for SBL's,you will be surprised.

I wasn't 100% happy upgrading to SBL's from Epos ES14's until I got to about the 52/135 level. Until then the SBL's were rather dry and flat sounding compared to the Epos, but with 135's the Epos felt like they had no more left to give while the SBL's were getting into their stride.

Having said that, I agree with Tom. Buy them now and sort the other stuff out later. The remarkable thing about SBL's is that they just keep getting better the more you feed them.

Mark.
