Equipment racks, they DO make a difference

Posted by: Alco on 27 May 2001

Hi folks,

As you might 've read in my "72/140 demo" topic,
a couple o' days ago, I bought me a new Equipment support.

It's a Sound-Factory "Tripod" rack. I don't think
they 're still being made, but my dealer is still selling 'em.

Now, I 've had a couple of supports over the years. From Apollo to Target, and from Atacama to Quadraspire.
I must say that none of these 4 brands gave such an improvement as my current sound-factory stand.
(though the QS came pretty close)

(even though it is hard to hide the cable-spaghetti behind it)It looks kinda cool,but... it sounds even better.

The rack is very light but also very rigid.
The sound has become much more relaxed and detailes are easier to follow. Even the low-end became a little more controlled.
I'm enjoying my system even more at modest listening levels.

hmm, didn't expected this much of it,really.
To be honest, I bought it because I like the looks of it. (price was 200 UKP)

So, another happy day has gone by.

I was just listening to some music at this very moment, but had to tell ya' guys this!

Well,I'm gone now, and enjoy some more music.

See y'all

Greetings,
Alco.

Are an excellent way of collecting dust, nothing else (although they can be a good trellis for house-ivy).

John

PS. My new Linn Basik, bought for £110, rocks!

PPS. The last bit is serious! I'm delighted with its performance - in many ways it's the Nait-2 of turntables - it doesn't do everything, but what it does well it does very well. Bargain, I think!

Hi John,

So (just like me) you haven't got some very good experience with equipment-supports ?

I also thought it wouldn't make that much difference, since I had some supports before.

But it really is an improvement! it doesn't take a very well "trained" audionut's ear to notice the difference. Even when I stand or sit way outside of the 'sweetspot', the difference is obvious. (but you are right,it sure is a dustcollector)

So the Linn Basik is good,eh.
Hmm,I also saw a s/h Basik with basik arm for about 100,- UKP. What cartridge do you have ?
You think it would be as good/or better as a Rega P3 ?

I'm still thinking of buying a (s/h) new TT myself, but have to start from scratch. I only have about 30 LP's left, but I can get more s/h.

Greetings,
Alco.

They do make a definite statement about the type of person you are though.

Buy mana and you are an uncouth lout.

Buy Hutter and you are a wealthy wood freak, with a secret desire that it came in stripped pine or ancient oak effect.

Buy naim and you are wealthy sycophant who is more concerned with style than substance.

Buy anything else and you are just a berk.

cheers

I don't believe that stands can make a difference. They're only for keeping the kit off the ground, right?

When I was looking to improve my sounds, my dealer suggested I buy some Naim kit. I borrowed a pair of 135s, HC and 82 for a weekend to partner to my Pye music centre front-end, but I found that the Quadraspire rack wobbled too much when it was placed on Naim equipment. I did hear a difference, though, but that was only the sound of the dealer when I showed him the big gouges on the Naim kit.

sorry, for the confusion..

I meant the Planar 3. I heard a Planar-3 once on my own Nait-2. I liked it,but I never really heard a Linn in my own system.

There's a dealer who's having a s/h Linn Basik/basik arm for sale for only 100 UKP (375 Dutch guilders)

I like a clear, dynamic sound with tight bass.
I never liked the look of the Planar3 though..

The only downside is that, when I decide to buy the Linn Basik, I have to order it without listening/seeing it first. The dealer lives to far away,so he'd have to sent it to me. (eek!)

Well, we'll see.

Maybe I'll better wait for a while 'till someting special comes along my way...

Having owned a Basik/Akito/K5 (yes, the Basik did come with an Akito - my first one had one) and now a Basik/Basik/K9, I can say that the K9 makes a bigger difference than the Akito does in this system.

Of course, neither touches my sadly defunct LP12/Aro/Lingo/Asaka, but then who knows what's round the corner...

John

PS. Still don't believe stands work... ;-)

You made a joke and you didn't mention Mana in a support thread.

You'll need to be as you pick up the thread of Jonathan's topic.

Of course stands make a difference. Anyone who argues otherwise is a fool. Just in case anyone missed my sarcastic tone above smile
