Experience with Rega Seperates
Posted by: Justin on 10 May 2003
WHo has any experience with Rega Seperates. There are some pretty good deals available on some older (clamshell) rega seperates going on at Audiogon. I'm hugely impressed with the Elas I have.
Anybody have exerience with the Rega seperates, like the Cursa/Exons or Cursa/Miai or even the Hal/Exs?
Very curious to read what people have to say about these.

I bought my Naos loudspeakers on the back of a Jupiter/Io/Cursa/Maia dem back in February 2000.
At the time, it was the most musically satisfying system I had ever heard.
I later heard a Naim CD3.5/Flatcap/Nait3/can't remember speaks... system and it wasn't as good, imho.
Regards,
Steve.

I own the Planet and a pair of Kytes, and had before a Planar 2 and a pair of ELAs.
IMHO, full Rega systems are lively, fast, musical, but just a little thin sounding.
Rega does carries some Naim's virtue, with it's own flavour added.
If you think it is a good deal, go for it.

Judd,
I have upgraded from an Elicit integrated to Cursa3/Exon2k over the last twelve months or so.I started off with a Cursa1 partnering the Exons and this brought more body, weight and scale to the sound, the source being a P9/Exact into an Eos phono stage. Then Rega brought out the Cursa3 claiming significant improvements over the Cursa2k, so I traded in the Cursa1 for a [line-level] three. Same improvements again. However, due to a recent reshuffle which involved adding a cd player back into the system I had to free up some shelf space, so out went the Eos and I had the moving magnet option installed in the Cursa3. Expecting to be disappointed with the loss of the Eos, I was absolutely gobsmacked by the improvement. Small group jazz, solo guitar, piano etc. sound fantastic and I'm sorry to have to keep repeating my self but there is just more BWaS. The Cursa3 with mm input also adds another dimension, a deeper richer more detailed sound. So,I now have a very satisfying system [P9/Exact/Jupiter/Cursa3/Exon2k/Ela1] which for a modest[ish] outlay sounds great.

Let me be a bit more specific. With 900 to 1000 to spend, the question is whether one should purchase the top Rega preamp of yesterday (the Hal, which I assume is similar to the current Cursa 3) and the Exon or Maia. These seperates would have retailed in the area of $2500 new about 2-3 years ago.
OR
A used Nait 5.
That's really what it comes down to. Are the top Rega seperates in black clam-shell casework up to the performance of a nait 5 through a pair of Elas?

Into Elas I'd say that the "Clam-shell" Cursa/Maia should see off a Nait 5, although the Nait 5 is a lot better than a Mira.

Clam-shell Planet/Io/Curse/Maia into Ela's with all Rega cable is well and truly betten by new Planet/Brio.Hard to believe-yes,but that is how i found it and did the upgrade. The former system was more hifi and the later more music.

Woah - now see that's odd - I find the new Planet much LESS musical than the original - it's still very good, but a bit too hifi for me
I use clamshell Planet->Couple->Mira 2000->Naim NACA5->Ela Mk 1, and also have a Rega Planar 3(RB300/tungsten arm), and in another system I have Rega Ear, NAD533 (Rega OEM for NAD), and I've got little complaint about any of it - although yeah, the Rega stuff can be a bit thin but not that bad. The NAIT 5 killed the Mira in a dem but it was out of my league price wise - the Mira I've had for 2.5 years and I do like it a lot
I'm getting a NAIT 3 soon though - for the Kytes/NAD rig
When the music's over turn out the lights

Mira 3
Apparently, Rega has changed the volume control scheme. Have they improved knob feel? Those who have twisted the Mira 2000 knob know what I mean...

Disregarding the fact that the Brio2000 was sonically preferable to the Mira2000--the Brio has a nice knob and much better feel to it

Dont know if the Mira3 knob has changed.
