Wired up wrong?
Posted by: caddyman on 05 May 2002
Mmmmm....this is strange.
I bought a cheap 42-5,snaps,90 just because it was there and I felt sorry for it! It's those big eyes and the chrome bumpers that did it! I unplugged my trusty little Nait, fired up the newly aquired items and the left and right channels are the wrong way round!Sounds previously coming from the right speaker now come from the left, and vice versa. I've double checked all connections and everything is correct.Could this be right and my Nait is wrong? I don't know which one is right! On the Nick Lowe track 'cracking up', his voice comes out to the right on the Nait and to the left on the other kit.Have I overlooked something stupid?

start with the simple stuff - is your left speaker plugged into "CH-1"? The right speaker into "CH-2". Now when you're playing a signal, turn the balance knob to the full to left channel - is the sound now coming only from the left speaker?

Thanks Rico.
I'm a clacker!
I had indeed got the speaker cables in the wrong holes! Channel 1 and 2 are on opposite sides to the Nait. I didn't look, i just plugged them in...like you do! I feel such a twat now.
Well, I have had a couple of beers this afternoon!

The question is how did you find them?
Posted on: 05 May 2002 by caddyman
I haven't really listened to them properly yet.
I couldn't find any bnc plugs for my lp12. I've got some somewhere! I plugged the lp12 in via a couple of bnc to phono adapters and then found the phono boards were wrong! A k9 through 323 boards isn't nice! I've just found a new unused Audio technica OC5 in my cupboard so I'll fit that to the gramophone and then try it.I'll have to get some mm boards 'cos I've got an Adikt on order.
I gave the cd5 a quick blast through them and in all honesty I think i prefer the Nait! Time will tell!

I suggest you install (or have your friendly dealer do so) BNC plugs soon. They are a world ahead of RCA's. Assuming of course you're staying with the pre/power approach rather than reverting to the magic of the Nait 2. Be careful though, you'll likely be looking for a 32.5 before you know it!
Pleased to hear the simple approach worked for you!

As long as one takes care to keep red to black consistant, does it actually make a difference if the right and left channels are reversed? I had always assumed that everything stayed in phase, but just reversed.

Bruce,
All over the world, we drive on the right side of the road. In England, it's the other side. Does it matter?
As long as all english drivers are on the same wrong side, no problem, they are in-phase.
Seriously, Candyman did not reverse polarities, but only left and right.
Some people say they can hear a difference if both channel are phase reversed. I can't and I think most of us can't.

I can definitely hear if both channels are phase reversed.
And point of fact, there are a number of countries driving on the
right side of the road:
- Ireland
- Singapore
- Austrlaia
- Hong Kong
- South Africa
- New Zealand
- Japan
... to name but a few.

I've never been there but I don't think Austrlaia is on the list.
But you forget Australia. Right is Right.
So, if you do hear phase reversed, what effect can you hear? Can you explain.
Of course, i don't speak of one channel out of phase vs the other, but both channels phase reversed.
