Just a thought from the Vista thread...
I think B&O.
Pretty and overpriced.
IMHO as ever...

Stay on topic...

If Apple were a hifi brand...what, in your opinion, would it be?

Linn - would be my guess
All products would have great ergonomics free from any silly windoze or gates.

I think B&O pretty, well made, good history and a little more expensive than other common crap.

Yep, style over substance, fits the pattern.
Posted on: 31 January 2007 by garyi
Expand a bit Bob, how is apple style over substance?
'Tis the same old story its just as 'cool' to bash apple as own it, like naim I guess haha.

If Naim were a another brand maybe it would be Linux?

Let's start with the Iphone launch where the product wasn't functional, but a mock up.

If Apple was HiFi:
- They would have started in the 1970's (the real Apple did just that).
- They would have a very outspoken leader that never, ever designed anything himself (Steven Jobs).
- When everybodey else turned to CD (Windows) they would continue with vinyl (Mac OS).
- The competition is numerous and has made thousands of products that's more or less the same (PC), Apple has made a few products that has changed your thinking of what HiFi should do (Apple 2, Mac, iMac).
- Styling wasn't important in the beginning (Apple 2) but is now (iMac).
Substituting Linn and their products in the reasoning above seem to fit rather well...

groan.

Wow, contentious subject.
Like Naim I choose them because they do what they do well, last long past others obselescence and hold their value through upgrades.
Also they both make me smile when I use them.
As to comparisons, Just for grenade sake...
*Linux= Radio Shack DIY, Lots of work
*MicroSoft= Sony, Denon etc. good, common dull breaks every few years.
*Unix/BSD= Valves, powerful, potential for greatness or fire.

Yawn. Is this going to be another 'Apple has no market share therefore they must be crap thread'? Move along. These are not the droids you are looking for.

Garyi - Let it go, it isn't worth it. I had exactly the same thing at an Architect's office I worked at and it drove me mad. It was all that "safe with the masses with Windows" thing, but they have folded now, and all the Architects I work with now are Mac based with only two exceptions. It's a flat-earth/round-earth thing. Just laugh instead. Remember, they never will learn, you can't teach a Sneech.
Back on topic, don't forget that they are high profile in movies, whenever you see a laptop it'll be Apple, but I suppose we never see hi-fi in movies, do we?

It is one already judging by the number of people using their products to listen to music.

Why high profile in the media - because Apple will have a very good product placement department that is probably very flexible.
It also has the advantage of having a very recognisable logo that is very visible when looking at the back of laptops etc and a unique relationship between the hardware and the operating system. Whereas with 'doze systems there is no unique logo on the back of various manufacturers boxes, just an anonymous beige or black box (in the main).
Although sometimes the media show the Macs in situations that I do not think they would be used, however the majority of the viewing public would not question the validity of the existence of a Mac in such a situation.

Maybe in the UK, but less so in the USA.
Don't forget that the new Shrek / Toy Story / Ice Age style animation which has revolutionised the cimema is all by Pixar, who are, err...Steve Jobs & Apple.
