NAIM DAC - latency in sonos system. HELP
Posted by: lamby2244 on 07 February 2010
Hi all - two posts in 24hrs; this is feeling like home.
I have an issue. My Naim DAC has introduced latency into my system. The challenge is that I have an open plan lounge, diner and kitchen which has two zones because of the space (a nice problem to have I guess). Clearly the DAC is processing and therefore lagging behind the Zone Player in the Kitchen which is introducing an eery cathedral like reverb!
Is there anything I can do? Sonos has no control in the software so I was wondering if there was something I could introduce that would help, and no another naim dac is not on the cards yet.... I planned an xps or a 250 upgrade!
Set up -
Lounge = ZP90 / DAC / 282 / 200 / Neat MF5s
Kitchen = ZP120 / neat petites
Any Ideas?
Thanks,
Simon

PROMLEMO solved - The felston lip sync box did the trick and with the onkyo A-5vl there are fewer boxes.
I wired it all up and set the box to 30ms delay and there you go no echo and no need to bypass the DAC when doing multi-room.
While playing around I borrowed an XPS2 and put it on the DAC OMG - mindblowingly great. I thought I would never leave bahind CD but I now have no regrets; and it is a girlfriend pleaser!

Here's an option to think about how....for other people, as I see you have already found a solution.
Take an analogue audio feed from your system (i.e. after the DAC has processed it's signal) and input to the Line input of the sonos...then have all the other sonos boxes playing the line input feed from the ZP90.
I think you might have to add a second ZP90 to your main stereo system, so that you could tell one to play from HDD storage to your stereo and the other to feed the analogue output from your stereo into the rest of the sonos system via the ZP90 line input.
Haven't tried this in practice but unless I have missed something the theory is sound. I have even used the line input of the sonos to share a turntable around the place via sonos.
PS: I will try see if this can all be done in one ZP90, i.e. Play via Digital out from HDD source and also accept and share the line input - would be interesting to see if it has the functionality ;-)

There's a delay from the analog feed in to the broadcast. Look at my first post and you'll see I suggested trying this delay as a solution.
