How's your week been then?

Posted by: Officer DBL on 08 November 2007

I thought it would be nice to have a thread where we could offload the trials and tribulations of the week. We could get issues off our chests, and maybe, just maybe, gain a few words of support from kindred spirits in return.

Here goes. My car was serviced and successfully put through the MOT in April. Since then it has been in and out of the garage as they have done their utmost to be completely ineffective in locating, diagnosing and providing a remedy to a persistent droning noise it has been making since the service. In the last three weeks they have replaced:

All four tyres
Front ns hub bearing
Both front track rods
Rear suspension ball joints and bushes
A complete front bumper
A complete front wing

The cause of the persistent drone has finally been attributed to the front tyres, and replacing them has fixed the problem. That is the good news. The rest is not so good.

The rear tyres had to be replaced as they had gone bald on the inside edge due to the rear suspension being worn; rear suspension which, whilst spotted at the service, was not picked up as an issue at the MOT. The garage advised I could leave the work until 2008 when it would be needed to pass the next MOT. In the meantime it would not cause any problems with the car. At all.

The track rods were replaced free of charge by the garage as they were embarrassed to admit that when the rear suspension was done and rear tyres replaced, they forgot to do the promised wheel alignment, so didn’t notice the seized track rod ends.

The ns hub bearing was replaced as the senior technician thought he could hear a rumble which he had misinterpreted as my persistent drone. The obvious solution here was not the corrective solution.

The replacement of the seized track rod ends corrected a steering wheel misalignment, but caused the persistent drone to be louder and the steering wheel to shimmy when braking. In frustration I took the specialist technician for a drive in the car to make sure he could hear the drone I was banging on about, and to experience the steering wheel shimmy.

The garage rang me on Friday to tell me they had solved the problems. A new set of front tyres was the solution, and both the drone and the shimmy had gone. Delighted I looked forward to picking up my drone free/shimmy free car. That was last Friday. I still don’t have my car back. Why? The eagle eyed amongst you may have noticed the mention of the new front bumper and wing earlier in the post.

When the garage was returning my car to the customer parking section having kindly washed it, another customer reversed into my car, demolishing the front bumper and wing. The garage said not to worry; they would put things right at their expense.

Today they rang to say my car was ready. The new bumper is nice, they said, and the wing is sorted out, they said. The new bits have fresher paint, they said, so they may look a little different to the rest of the car, they said.

I am now looking forward to an interesting conversation with the garage this evening.

Kind regards

Rob

Bloody toothache is back. Going to the dentist end of month to have the extraction, as the recommended hospital has sent me (after 3 weeks)an appointment for 31/01/08. If I'd booked with the dentist, the appointment would have been this week.

Rob sounds like a new garage is required. What car do you have? If it's a main dealer look for a specialist local garage.

Hi Howard,

You have my sympathy – I don’t know which I dislike most; toothache or going to the dentist. Having to suffer one while waiting for the other must be driving you to distraction.

The car is a BMW530i sport auto. The garage is a BMW main dealer and yes, going forward I am going to look for an independent garages, but not until I have sorted things out with the dealer.

So far terrible.

PC motherboard and power supply failed needing total replacement the result being over three quarters of my photographs, including 100's of family memories, are now in digital neverland. (mental note: back-up more often).

And this morning a very close friend died after a brave struggle with cancer at 37.

All in all not the best.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your friend Graeme.

I've have a mixed week.

Had a second job interview in Harrogate (good), which meant spending a total 7 hours on trains (bad). In the end I accepted a different job offer (good, I hope).

I've also had some bad luck with recently ordered CDs, one was copy-protected and isn't worth returning taking into account postage to the USA, the other was a dual disc (bad?), but it does play on my CDX2 (good).

I've got paintballing to look forward to on Saturday and been told by others that it can be very painful, any idea how much padding/protection I need?

Sorry for your loss Graeme. Certainly puts ones own life into proportion.

Yes, it must have been the service and MOT that caused the tyres to spontaneously create a droning noise that wasn't there before. Perhaps the garage were frantically clutching at straws in an attempt to cure a fault (and retain a customer) that miraculously appeared following their work on your car whilst you, perhaps, pointed the finger. Their reward - you are taking your business elsewhere.

Me? I've mostly been dealing with clueless car drivers who've watched too much 'watchdog', cannot describe what they want or what their issues are and who immediately default to what we in the trade refer to as the 'since ya' mentality - you know, 'since ya' serviced my car my radio doesn't work - oh, and that scratch that was obscured by 20000 miles of road filth is something you did and must pay to put right now you've kindly washed my car and revealed it to me.

Spend 5 hours trying to install a HP printer to Vista - printer wouldn't talk to software and no one seemed to be talking to the beautifully downloadeed Vista com(bastard)patable driver.

the tech guy from my wife's work (tis her printer) has spend much time also not being able to install it. Plug and Play - its the future Big Grin

Printer still doesnt work..................... for once I can appreciate the Mac Ladds smirking

Very sorry to hear of your loss - it is very sad when somebody dies so young.

On your photos - if the disk was not damaged and you still have it then it should be possible to mount it in another machine and copy all photos.

Graeme's post really does put everything into perspective, very sad to hear of your loss.

Anyway, my little problem ealier today is really very insignificant by comparison......... Decided to get into work early today as I had plenty to be getting on with. Instead of spending this time in a productive way, I had to clear yet another pile of vomit from outside my doors - Yuk! Joys of retail! It took a good 15 minutes Roll Eyes

The problem seems to have become significantly worse in the past six months even though we now have a street cleaning technician dedicated to Hotel St and four adjoining streets provided by the council supposedly responsible for keeping the area really nice and clean. So why is it that I always seem to end up doing the cleaning Frown

Well, tomorrow is another day.............

Best regards,

Peter

ROTF's suggestion is a good one. Most PCs will accept a second hard disk, and that can be used as a convenient backup.
If the photo files have been deleted, they are probably still recoverable. There are numerous file recovery programs available, some of them freeware.
My week has been lousy. I've been ill with breathing problems and now my wife (and sometime nurse) has developed what seems like flu. But next week should be better.

Not bad thanks,

At home standard week, kids doing school stuff and wifey walking the dog, etc.

At work I finished one project to the point of being ready for checking, got stuck into an internal investment case for £4m of spend over the next couple of years, organised a day out for a gang of engineers and reviewed a couple more projects.

Oh and my lungs are working fine following an annual lung function test, I occiasionally solder stuff.

Looking forward to a weekend of garden chores, car washing and playing with the nippers.

Next week brings the funneral of an uncle, 2 days training and the pitch to the investment board.

In the light of Graeme's sad news, I feel guilty in reporting I've had a splendid week (so far).

First off, a dispute I've had going on for months with a decidedly dodgy Financial Advisor who has been threatening to take me to court has been resolved. I called his bluff & he's backed right down.

The wife's just got a new job much closer to home, which means she won't have to travel 35K miles a year and can spend more time at home looking after me and doing the cooking. Well, that's what I plan anyway...

To top it all, I had an absolutely splendid day at JWM's place on Tuesday attending the inaugural meeting of the West Norfolk Phonographic Society. A lovely occasion with some great folk, great kit and great music!

I know that eventually something's going to come out of left field & spoil things, but meanwhile...

Indeedy.

In our case, last evening a 'yoof' member of the family turning on the bath taps and then going back to do some 'quick' computer stuff ... with inevitable consequences...

At least said yoof knew that bath water pouring through the ceiling light fitting below was likely to be dangerous.

While my travel agent wife is in Canada for 10 days I am it for the kids entertainment..

My son is an "accident report form waiting to be signed" - Today we are bouncing on the trampoline and he manages to kick me in the mouth, bleeding teeth result.

Shortly after he manages to damage his shin on a concrete block, bounce along on one foot towards the comforting arms of dad & smack into his sister on the way...smashing his mouth into her head, spliting his top lip (more blood, but his this time Smile ) and making his sister cry.

I comforted both until the crying ceased and shortly after, they stopped crying too.

Earlier this week he has cut his foot and big toe in separate incidents, lost a finger nail after crushing it between 2 concrete blocks and generally had a bad time of it.

His front teeth are slowly getting some white back into them after he face planted the stairs a month ago, loosening 4 teeth (lots of blood that time) & splitting his lip so badly that he should of had stiches.

He is 4, I am 43 and I wonder if he will make it to 10 at this rate....

I am looking forward to my wife returning so that, at least, some of this shite will happen on her shift.

Dived with seals on the Farne Islands last weekend.

This was followed by 3 of the following 5 days doing Photoshop retouching. My job is pretty boring nowadays.

My dad is upto level 3 morphine re his bone cancer pain - totally agree that family/friends who fall ill ensures things get put into perspective!

Also puts into perspective priorities in life, and things that some folk moan about...!

Not such a bad week all things considered...

Had nice evening, as it were, chewing the cud with Pawel, Hillee, ans Hillee's cousin [in Polish pronunciation "coosin" - well till I sorted it out] Dacian [[correctly Daatsian], and just home ready for sleep. The brews were Zubrowka {bison Vodka] plus Co-op cloudy apple juice, Lech, Tyskie, and Zyviec [Lech like Loch but with an "e", Tyskie like Toeskie, and Zyviec like Joeviets], which three amount to being much nicer than Carlberg!

Apart from that I could not have relaxed so well except for a reasinable assessment in my new job!

Life is short and eternity is long: Carpe Diem... George

Ah yes, I have the T-shirt on this one too!

Spent much of Tuesday morning sitting an a dentists surgery in Wellingborough awaiting for a couple of X-ray results and for a couple of dental surgeons to come to a conclusion on my 15 year old son's front tooth........

He too head-butted some stairs at the age of 6 as I remember and loosening both front teeth. Age 13 and thankfully wearing a gum-shield he recieved a hockey ball to the face, loosening one of his front teeth again Roll Eyes To say he had a fat lip was a but of an understatement......it looked more like a tomato! Age 15 now, he received an elbow to the very same tooth again while togging up for another hockey game before he had his gum shield in as he wasn't even on the pitch! Roll Eyes

Macker, I know just how you feel.... and yes, it doesn't seem to get any easier as they grow up Smile

Kind regards,

Peter

My wife's granny died on Thursday morning from a chest infection contracted while in a hospital ward for a month following a serious stroke. She never understood why she was in hospital and just wanted to go home.
The company I work for, together with another 200-ish people, is so strapped for cash that we can't even have the heating on. A 1937 build ex-RAF hangar isn't the best place to be under the circumstances. I might just be going back to Saudi....
On a positive note my body is 100%, my wife is finally getting over a two month cold/chest infection, both cars are good, the cat keeps killing things, my family are all doing well. I could go on, but my blessings outweigh the bad things. Tick tick tick.

First, thanks indeed for the condolences which are genuinely appreciated. He was an incredible chap who loved the gentlemanly things in life including his fanastic 1967 AlfaRomeo. I can safely say he lived life to the full and I'll really miss him.

Incredibly my week continued downhill. Firstly a costly puncture then we (well, my wife) very nearly set the whole house alight...a real fire extinguisher job.

To cap it all at 3.00am on Friday morning I awoke to vomit copiously, not to mention the other end. Spent yesterday in bed feeling absolutely crap.

Better today though. I'm beginning to think its this thread....watch what you wish for -
I think I'll start a thread 'Anyone get a 555 from an anonymous benefactor this week?'...and see what happens.

Roll on next week!

Don't know about bad weeks, but my year's been pretty crap - my father became critically ill in June and died late July, since when I bought a car to vist my folks more often which has proven to be faulty and has taken over 2 months to be replaced (last week) - still got there in the end.

Not nice, especially seeing your father lying dead in hospital....

This thread is about as miserable as some of the whinging threads on PFM. For goodness sake cheer up a bit.

I just landed a 12 month contract today.
