Not strictly true. In China they built the last big steam engines in 1989.
It's interesting to note that in the 1930's Brittish coal fired steam engines on the route from London to Scotland made the all time speed record for steam engines in ordinary traffic at 198 kph! Modern hi speed trains in Britain aren't that much faster.
