Help with HDX and Airport express

Posted by: jech on 02 August 2010

Hello.

After some hours of trying to understand how to connect a HDX wirelessly with an Apple airport express into an existing network I need some help.

Could someone who have done this please help me with a step by step guide. The set up guide for airport express isn´t explaining how to do it if it´s a HDX that is supposed to be connected (or installed).

How to install the express, and how to make the HDX understand that it is connected to the network.

Please in a very understandable manner, I´m not very good at computers and these hard to understand network things.

Fore example, is the Airport supposed to be connected to the HDX with the ethernet cable when installet or is it supposed to be connected to the router or computer.

I don´t want to be guessing my way forward.

I have a Mac comuter.

Thanks

Jens

I would recommend that you get a different router before spending the effort. The Airport is not the most robust piece out there.

I will venture you will experience drop-outs, the Mac forgetting there is an HDX attached, and altogether somehow lose the connection to the Airport.

I have NEVER seen a Mac NOT forget external drives, airports etc... On my buddy's iMac, EVERYTIME he reboots or if the computer sleeps, he MUST unplug and replug in the external drive to make it recognize it. So much for paying an extra $50 for a "Mac" specific Seagate drive.

I recommend a Linksys Rangemax Wireless N Router (about the same price as your AP express).

Hi jech,

I couldn't get my Airport Express to connect with my HDX, but finally resolved the problem using a different approach.

See the recent thread "HDX wireless fix".

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Dave.

When it's all set up, the HDX connects to the Airport Express via an ethernet cable. The AE will then talk to your wireless router and act as a bridge between the router and the HDX. The HDX will then get an IP address from the router, and connect to the internet/NAS/other shares.
You will need to set up the AE to act in this way, and I managed simply by following the instructions in the software supplied with it.
I think there are some issues with the AE talking to all routers from all manufacturers, which is why I ended up with an Apple wireless router too!
It's been rock solid since, even though I use a Windows network
