Channel 4 Top 100 al***s last night

Another one with OK Computer at number 1!!

Its now becoming a cliche to put that top of the list. Alright its a good album but certainly not even Top 20 ever surely? Its not as good as the Bends either.

Additionally, most people I know don't really listen to it anymore. Certainly not one that gets brought out on a regular basis year in year out anyway.

Can anyone explain it to me?

Concerningly I thought this list was compiled and voted for by musos, not the public?

I find it laughable that classic albums has entries from last year, sorry but there needs to be a better definition of classic, I would assume maturity would have to be in there some where.

On that subject I was not at all fussed by the Libertines, seems to be another case of fame because of just another junkie loser.

These shows are compulsive viewing, good fun even though you disagree with a lot of it.

How do you get away from the flavour of the month biasing, stand-up Dido and The Libertines.

Radiohead are an interesting band but No 1, I don't think so. And why were Velvet Underground so low down, surely that album deserves to be in the top 10.

Gives us something to argue about I suppose.

Ah I have just realised that it is in fact a load of bollocks.

"Our panel of music industry experts have had the painstaking task of selecting 125 classic albums for you to choose from"

If I cared I would look at the 25 that didn't make the list.

I had 51 of the albums on the list, but none of the Beatles or Rollings Stones ones.

Can anyone compile a list of the 25? Where do you find the full list?

I aggree that the most interesting thing about this program might be to have a butchers at the 25 that the public didn't vote for.

What's the betting theyre all better than Dido and at least one is widely believed by people on this forum to be better than OK Computer.

I'm gen-x, and I *fekking loathe* Oasis' later output, though "Definitely maybe" is good. Beatles-beater though? Do me a favour! WHY is that piece of crap "Sgt Pepper" ALWAYS above "Revolver" though? Is it 'cos of "Yellow submarine" (who's only redeeming feature is Mick and Marianne chinking champagne glasses in the background)? "Revolver" did everything "Pepper" did, bigger better and earlier.

Kind of pleased to see "Kind of blue" absent. Jazz isn't my thing, and I do own KOB, but it's sooooo milked.

As for "Loveless", maybe the reason it's not on their is the same as for "Trout mask replica" - to many people, it's tuneless noise. I'm doing my best to get into both of these, but having real problems. Mind you, TMR was making a bit more sense last night, but still seems totally structure-less. Guess I'm just your average 3/4 or 4/4 timing structure man...

As for Radiohead - all I can say is - prrrreeeeedictable choice. OKC is OK, but it's not all that. As for the crapiness we can't even attempt to guage that are "Kid A" and "Amnesiac"... At least "Hail to the thief" is listenable. I still think "Pablo honey" is their best, although "Lucky" is one of their best tracks.

BTW - I have 66 of the 100 - some on vinyl, some on CD, and some on both. I'd love to know why my copy of "Paranoid" on vinyl sounds so muffled though!

Sgt Pepper is not a 'Piece of Crap'; it is difficult to criticise a list if you come out with such... Revolver is great but I think Pepper hangs together better as an album. There was no Steely Dan that I could see also, but they are a bit love/hate. Words cannot adequately describe how much my wife hates this band.

To describe Sgt. Pepper as crap is sheer churlishness. It is, however, a highly over-rated album. It may be due to people's fond memories of 67 (summer of love, first spliff, first shag etc..) with Sgt Pepper as the soundtrack, that accounts for its continual high placing in polls.
Where its good its fantastic (Day in the life, Mr. kite) but there is some dross like 'Getting better' " I used to be cruel to my woman I beat her etc.." I mean, c'mon.
Of course 'Revolver' is by far a better album, Mcartney at his peak rather than his twee worst (when I'm 64). I'm as big a Beatles fan as anyone else but inovative brilliant music didn't end with Sgt. Pepper.

One of the reasons I hope to live a long time is, I want to see lists like this in 2025 or so; will the Beatles still be there? (I hope so.) Or, will #1 be Gas Music from Jupiter by Feckless Weasel or something.

If you look at the link in my first post in this topic you will see a link to nominations.

When you have made the list then please feel free to post it.

When I am 64, twee? I don't think so, the lyrics are actually very cynical, 'yours sincerely wasting away' etc. The tune is a jolly sing along which actually appeals to the very people it mocks. I have all the Beatles output and as I was born in '71 it holds little nostalgia value. I think Pepper still stands up and would be career highlight for most bands.
