Ken,

Hearing the trio live will quench any lingering doubt.

Hi Stewart,

I Could not agree more. I went to see the Keith Jarrett trio at Boston Symphony Hall last night and they really were excellent.

If they did ever 'lose it' for a while, as some critics would have us believe, they certainly have 'it' once again. I don't think I have ever been so full immersed in a live concert before and I am not exactly a hard core jazz fan. The playing was superb, the sound for such a big hall amazingly natural and the whole thing just incredibly engaging.

If you get the chance to hear this trio live you really should jump at the chance, I know I will smile

Cheers

Hi Ken

I don't seem to be able to find any central listing of concert dates. Jarrett has been battling with illness and has had a very light touring schedule in recent years.

The good news is he seems to e well on the mend judging by Fridays preformance here in Boston.

All I can suggest is you keep an eye out in the normal places for news of any tour dates.

Sorry not to be of more help frown

I love every just about every note I've ever heard from Jarrett, including his latest album Inside Out.

You know what I particularly love about it? Take the title: musicians often use the terms "inside" or "out" to describe the continuum of convention and accessibility in music. "Outside" music is typically thorny, atonal, arrhythmic, devoid of recognizable form, cacophonous, and often off-putting. There is a long standing tradition in jazz of totally improvised music, and more often than not, it's "outside" in nature.

But free improvisation certainly needn't be inherently "out," it's just as possible to improvise "inside" music, and that's precisely what Jarrett, Peacock, and DeJohnette have done ... they've turned the default notion of free improvisation "inside out."

Expanding on this, it's always seemed to me that there are two ways to approach playing "outside" -- one is to imply to the listener: "OK, we're gonna go outside now and play, you stay here." No wonder the result can often be hard to digest. The other, and I think superior, way to approach playing "outside" is to imply to the listener: "Hey, we're gonna go outside and play ... wanna come?" On Inside Out that's exactly what Jarrett, Peacock, and DeJohnette do.

fred, very interesting analysis... fascinating angle!! as i said in my first posting, i was not expecting this album to be this good (not really sure why, perhaps its what the press have said about his output lately -- dunno) -- but i was pleasantly surprised to hear such good music, period. quite nice too as my system is in top form at the moment.

will study your "inside out" frame a little more...

boy, what i would give to attend a jarrett concert.

Lots of Jarrett links available at ecm records

Only date I can find for the Trio is Jun 26, 2002 New York, NY at Carnegie Hall USA.

Long way but could be worth a trip to NY if you are so inclined.

Cheers

Keep us informed, it's not far from Boston and I refused to pay over a grand for Who tickets, so the 'concert fund' is looking good. smile

I am applying 'wife logic' in this case, e.g. if Sue buys shoes at $300 but they WERE $800 she has saved ME $500. Worth a try wink

There are a few other Naim'ed forum members in the NY area so we could make a night of it.

Cheers
