BNC plugs - what type and where to get them?

Posted by: Top Cat on 11 January 2004

Hi folks.

Until I decide whether or not to move to a Prefix for my LP12, I'm going to be using the MC boards in my 82 (whilst I still have it)/52 (when I get it - just over a week).

I need to get my Aro tonearm cable reterminated from a 5-pin DIN plug at the amp end to 2xBNC plugs (suitable for use with K or S boards). The reason I have a DIN plug on the end is due to my previous preamp having a DIN input for its MC boards, in case anyone wonders.

Anyway, I need to know where to buy some suitable BNC plugs, and if there is a choice of plugs, which ones would be best. If/when I move to a prefix I will almost certainly resell my Aro arm cable, so I want to get good plugs which will do the cable (and whatever is at the other end of it!) justice.

Can anyone advise? As of tomorrow I'll be otherwise vinyl-less until I get the cable reterminated, as I'd been using my old preamp's MC board and its tape output into the 82 as a stop-gap (far from ideal in some ways, but at least it sounded decent).

Thanks,

John

Why not see if those nice people at Naim will send you a couple.

Just out of interest, what happened to the ones that came with the ARO?

Most of the information you need here

Soldering information is in the old pre-amp manual (not much help) but can be found on the web with a bit of a hunt.

I you give me your address, I will send you the instructions that came with my 72 for assembling the BNC plug.

Hi folks.

To answer a couple of questions: My Aro cable was new, custom-terminated by Naim for my previous preamp which is why it never had BNCs. I have the old-style preamp manual (as I have an 82) but the wiring isn't the issue - it's the obtaining of the plugs! I think maybe I will ask Naim nicely and maybe they can send me a couple, if I promise to be a good boy!

Thanks for that link, Duncan - if soldering a BNC is trickier than soldering a DIN I will probably just get my dealer to do it, as I found soldering a DIN to be a bit fiddly Big Grin

Neil,

Life-saver! Thanks, didn't know that. That means I can wing it for a bit whilst I decide whether to go for the Prefix or not*.

John

* depends largely on whether I can sell my (98 era) 82 (mint, SNAPS, complete, s# 142xxx) - I thought I had a confirmed sale but the prospective buyer appears to have fallen off the edge of this flat earth...
