Which NAS to use with the HDX?
Posted by: Rockingdoc on 04 January 2010
Does anyone have any specific recommendations for a reliable NAS to use with the HDX directly. Is there a Naim recommendation?

In the HDX review appearing in Hi-Fi Choice October 2008, an interview with Paul Stephenson is included. He mentioned that Naim will be publishing suggestions as to suitable NAS drives when their tests are complete.
Maybe they'll publish a list toghether with the software update

It will be interesting to see how this evolves. I've been following Paul McGowan's trials and tribulations with NAS drives over at PS Audio. The long and short of it is that they have decided to build and offer their own, having farted about with off-the-shelf solutions from HP, Lacie and others.
I wonder if Naim will go the same route or perhaps the way the HDX addresses the NAS is different to the PS device, and hence stresses the NAS less?
For what it's worth, I'm using a TimeCapsule, but as the days wear on, I'm wondering how long it will last

Well the Samsung Ecogreen 1.5TB hard drive in my Netgear ReadyNas Duo just failed on the 27th day after delivery when my daughter dumped the contents of her Mac laptop onto it.
I then found that this drive is not on the Netgear list of recommended drives!.
One problem I found with the ReadyNas, which I bought to feed my NaimUnitit is that
even in the uPnP folder view, it likes to sort album track names into track name sequence rather than file name sequnce. The track files names begin 01... 02... etc so that they can be put in the right order. To overcome this I have loaded Mediatomb on the NAS.
I chose the ReadNas as there is quite alot of online support. They were also giving away a free hard drive before Christmas. I have programmed it to go to sleep at night and then wake up in the morning.
Now that I have learnt about streaming audio I am wondering if I will want to do the same thing with Video.

Thanks, I am glad I asked.
The HDX offers a neat package which appeals, and there is no denying brand loyalty and the fact that matching boxes looks nicer. BUT, the current HD capacity of the HDX is far too small to be of any use to a serious music collector, and if I am going to rip it all, vinyl and CD, I want a complete solution. I guess I'll have to wait a bit longer until either (preferably)the HDX gets a pair of 2 Tb HDs, or a reliable plug and play NAS is sorted.

I've got a 1tb Qnap which is very good. With the drop in the cost of storage I'm thinking of adding another Nas to the network, purely for music. You can get an 8tb ReadyNas for around 850 - looks good but maybe a bit OTT. I've heard good things about the RipNas which has an on-board CD drive to automatically rip files. In fact Linn recommend it. Problem is that bit's expensive - about 850 for 1tb and 560 for a 3tb extension box.
I don't use my nas with an HDx though - I think the coincept is seriously flawed. I like the look of the Uniti but would prefer not to have to pay for unused amplification. Maybe the Unitiqute may be more reasonable.
I hope that Naim will produce an individual streamer about the price of a CD5i or CD5XS but I'm concerned that they may realise they've gone the wrong way with the HDX and too scared of losing face to add a streamer to the range. After all there is space for a hard disk machine and a steamer in the range but I expect that the HDX would lose out.

ive got a ripnas 1 tera. it is well built quiet and has a teas drive fitted which have always had a good reputation. the first manufactuer to produce a digital streamer/control to look like a piece ofhifi will have the winner. linn too expensive /dont need to have dac/amplifier'
who will it be cyrus/arcam/naim .or even cambridge. they dont have to be silly money. sonos is ok but only 16 bit

I'm with you on that one. I expect that it will take a few years to design a decent user interface so we'll have to put up with the rubbish they produce at the moment. But if it includes a web radio, DAB, FM and the ability to rip easily from vinyl they will sell like hot cakes

im using ripnas for ripping. just added half giga to the one tera plus 1,5 tera as back up.
just need a tip top streamer/ controller to feed the naim dac, im currently using sonos but cant download high res tracks. doubled back up with another 1tera nas and put safely away. the ripnas as ripped 1950 cds without any problem. the quality at 16bir through the dac is excellent. truly think the cd is dead very shortly
