CD5i and Nait5i reviewed in April 'Hi-Fi Choice'

Posted by: J.N. on 25 February 2004

Good in-depth reviews and Roy George answers some questions. There is also mention of the forthcoming 'Arriva' speaker.

In addition, there is a cover mounted sampler CD from The Scottish Company.

Unfortunately this issue is not available in the US for a couple months. Why not fill us in? Come on.

OK; selected snippets:-

'Naim kit appeals to the rock end of the spectrum because it acts on the sort of emotional level rock music addresses'

Hmmmmm; so classical/jazz/folk etc: through Naim kit ain't emotive?

Or does the quote imply that rock fans are thickos with a limited emotional response?

Last paragraph:-

'It is not hard to see why Naim is still at the top of the hi-fi tree, with products as fine as these'.

'It's still a controversial choice - the limited inputs, the lack of digital output, the enforced bandwidth changes will never sit comfortably with some. But the Naim components sound so good, that it makes it hard not to be won over'.

Alan Sircom is the reviewer and rates the two items as a 'Hi-Fi Choice Best Buy'.

...and you get naughty nudey shots of the units with their "clothes" off Smile

I hope he didn't listen to them as he pictures them though - stacked - that won't have helped the sound.

What the h*ll are "enforced bandwidth changes"?

Is this their way of saying "rolled off"? Twas true of the 72 I had - the newer stuff sounds 'wider' to me.

As it goes here from time to time, maybe the new cd5i betters the cds and the new nait5i betters the old good 52/250 ?

Anybody else read the review and wondered about Roy Gregory liking Naim equipment so much while only using NACA5. I reread it and then twigged that it's actually Chris Thomas reviewing it and not Roy, as it says under the Title.

I have read a few of Roy's reveiws of Naim equipment especially the Nap 300 and Roy seems to advocate ditching Naim Naca 5 and replacing it with some new fangled Nordost cable.

Whilst most beleive the Nordost kills the PRAT of the Naim gear Roy seems to get quite excited about Nordost but no-where near as excited as the chappie displaying Nordost power chords at the Bristol Hi-fi show. It was so nice to see someone who was totally convinced that his product was so impresive. It was on par with the excitement shown by Steve Margiolis displaying his Seventh Veil speakers.
