Instant 'Dan Collection
Posted by: woodface on 02 July 2003
I bought 5 steely dan albums on Saturday, 'Two Against Nature' was on CD but the rest are 2nd hand vinyl. I got Aja for £2! Of the ones I bought 'Can't buy a thrill' is my current fave. the others are 'Goucho' and one which I cannot remember the name of but has 'ecstassy' in the title with a wierd pink cover? I still think they can be a bit clinical but you cannot knock the craft which goes into each release.

I have both the CD and the vinyl (sad man). The vinyl is a reasonably good and heavy pressing and is warmer and smoother than the CD.

Simon,
You may find this site useful for Dan words, although does not appear to be up to date.
http://members.aol.com/danomalley/steelydan/It always amused me on my Japanese LP pressing of 'The Nightfly', I found on the lyric sheet what appears to be explanations of some of the words used!

Geoff

Thanks Geoff.
That helped to sort out a few lyrical confusions!

I was thinking the verse, rather than the line, especially, "Frankly I could use a little face time/In the service elavator". It wouldn't surprise me to find there's more to it than I've seen as well, though.
Pete.

Especially for Dean from Aquisitions!

In general I would tend to agree with Simon Matthews about the more recent remasters being better than those on "Citizen Steely Dan", but was most disappointed with "Royal Scam" which is my favourite Dan. Sadly, the latest remaster seems remixed as well as remastered and Larry Carlton's guitar seems lost in the mix. In the case of Scam, I play CSD disc 3 by preference.

I now have the above albumn (£4.99 in the HMV sale). It's pretty good but sometimes a bit too clever clever - really not sure about the Ellington cover!
