George Harrison

This morning, the radio said that George Harrison was flying to his home in Hawaii. Sad to say that things don't look at all well for him (cancer). This is really bad news.

George must be the most under-rated Beatle, who released solo works that, to me, were on a par with John's. His contributions to the Travelling Wilburies, Tom Petty and others are superb and add charm to the mix.

If you're planning on buying any of George's albums, then now is the time to do so. The cynic in me is predicting that the record companies will try and cash in on this great artist.

At the moment it is all speculation but it never looks good when cancer comes back. I am a big Beatles fan and I think George made a telling contribution (Taxman is one of my all time favourite songs). Whether he was a 'great artist', I'm not so sure and I don't think you can really cite the 'Travelling Willburies' as proof of anything! What always wories me in this situation is when praise is heaped to highly just because someone has had the misfortune to die!?

True, but when BB King or Clapton shuffle their mortal coils - I will not be praising them for their guitar abilities. That's because I don't rate them at all.

On the other hand, IMHO the Willburies were a superb group.

For me George Harrison is not the greatest of guitarists. But he always gets and has gotten the most meaty tones out of the electric and acoustic guitars. My two favorite guitar tones of all time are his slide guitar in "Free As a Bird" and his opening guitar licks in "Basketball Jones" by Cheech and Chong.
