Not being a hardened folkie , this name meant nothing to me until a few weeks ago when I heard her first album - Black Mountains Revisited . I quite liked it but a bit finger in the ear and home knitted jumpers for me . But... the new album Lilac Tree is very different - her voice is so beautiful and the music is folk influenced but not overwhelmingly so.She sings rather like Joni Mitchell ....high praise indeed.I never thought that I would ever seriously listen to someone singing the kid's rhyme - This Little Fishy but she throws a completely different perspective on it. this brought back so many memories of when my daughter was born. A truly great CD. The title track (Lilac Tree) of which it has to be said has been heard (beginning) so many times before. "1,2,3,4,5 once I caught a fish alive, 6,7,8,9,10, then I let him go again, why did you let him go cause he bit my finger so, which finger did he bite, this little finger on the right, bla bla bla. I mean this in the nicest possible way because it's not been off my CD player in the last two weeks!!

A track from Lilac Tree was played on Late Junction the other night. Quite excellent, more Jane Siberry than Joni Mitchell I thought, and the track played was much more jazz influenced than country. In any case, yet another purchase down to Late Junction!
Apparently Julie is appearing at Borders Bookshop on Oxford Street on next Monday evening; should be worth a visit.
