How many people have reached their final resting point in their audio equipment?

Posted by: Consciousmess on 14 August 2010

Hi all,

This is a quick survey as I have used this forum for a sufficiently long time to recognise many of your names. I can even perceive the essence of some of your 'characters' from the general tone and the words you use. No doubt you can all do the same - however inaccurate we all are, but this is still human nature.

That is an aside. What I am curious about, however, is amongst you all, who has reached a point in their audio equipment where they feel the goal has been reached?

I know the great appeal with Naim is that you can continually upgrade, but realistically, there are always factors to consider such as finance available, what the other half agrees etc.

All I wish to here back (for the sake of my amateur survey) is:

A) I'm there
B) There's more to come

Thanks in anticipation of your reponses!!

It's a pity you won't be further south than London, 'cos you're welcome to pop in and hear my n-Sats and my 200. Admittedly it's only fronted by a 202 Smile

Dunno if Naim HQ can do a quick turnaround, but a factory visit should be on your itinerary.

My only chance to go in the direction of Salisbury is to make my students want to go on a day tour to Stonehenge and environs. We'll see.

Sorry for hijacking ...

It's A
although my LP12 will get the new Linn motor box/phono to replace the Lingo 1 at some point in the future. I am really happy with my LP12/lingo1/clearaudio/benz,cdx/xps,82/supercap,250/SBL's. I am still amazed by the way it sounds at regular intervals.

I thought I was more or less there until one day last week when I had a listen to some different speakers.

"A" for me, I made adjustments over the last year and was able to put some of the extra dosh in my investment account and upgrade my TT. I stepped off the path a bit, but have incredible sound I'm very happy to stay with.

If anything were to change it would be the tuner as I"m sure there'll be streaming and satellite radio plus my needed FM. It has to be an all in one box as my connections are full now. I don't see this happening for a few years tho.

Clearaudio TT, DV XX2, Superline/HC,
CDX2 xps
Roksan tuner
LFD NCSE
Harbeth sHL5

Samsung TV and bluray player.

I think I'm there now.
Linn LP12 Ittok and Dynavector 23RS
CD3.5 and Flatcap
72 (used)and hicap
IXO (used)and two 140s (one used)
IBLs
Chord Odyssey 4 cable
Graham's hydra off a 10mm spur
"Custom" built rack
Rack and speakers on Naim's silver feet thingys.
Could go on but I like it now and feel the stuff is all broadly at the same level. I've heard some fabulous high end systems but will never afford them and think the journey towards them would be too expensive. Anyway I'm getting on now so would be dead before I'd saveed the money etc!
Only way I'd change is if something broke down and couldn't be repaired. I get it serviced avery 8 - 10 years.

Surely it is better to travel hopefully than to arrive - I think of the system yet to come, the system that my current components would not be worthy parts of - sorry that must have sounded needlessly messianic.

I am not far away from the system I seek - just a few little tweaks to get the digital side right and I'm there.

Office system could be better, but I am supposed to be working when I'm in the office. And in five years - that's it: I'm free.

Late night CDX2/Stax could do with XPS2

Could do with more Power-Lines and another hiLine and the forthcoming Naim universal transport that plays Blue Ray, SACDs etc.

And when are Linn bringing out that aluminium plinth?

SG cartridge?

OK I admit it - the torture never stops.

A definite B! Having bought new supercap earlier this year (to go with 201/280/napsc), I need to spend more to make the most of it.

Next stop 252, but really don't know how soon that will be (just hope I don't hear a 552). Best case next year, worst case maybe 3 years or so... then after that a 300, upgrade the LP12 a bit more, then add 555 to CDS2 etc...

This year's LP12 upgrades were the first TT spending in 15 years, 2007's SBL's were the first speakers in 17 years, the CDS2 was the first new cdp in 15 years (IIRC)

I don't upgrade things often, but I like to notice the difference when I do!

I've invested quite a lot in my system in the past 2 years. Purchases include a 555PS and CDS3 to replace my CDS2/XPS. Also SL2s and n-Sub to replace my Allaes. Plus Radikal/Urika for my LP12.

Perhaps it's not susprising that for the first time in years I'm not even looking just now. I was thinking of an Aro or Keel, possibly even a 552 following a recent thread.

But I'm happy with what I have now and feel that I've arrived. Smile

Occasionally, after particularly wallet searing moments of unbridled impetuosity, my wife has threatened me with meeting my 'final resting point' and I guess she might throw the boxes in after me.

So to answer the question in a different way...'Almost'.

I would have thought the answer was A, but a Lingo 3 showed up on my doorstep last month. It looked up at me with big, sad puppy eyes, and I didn't have the heart to tell it to go home. I am remembering how much fun it is to re-listen to all that music on a better system, but most upgrades are unconscionably expensive at this point.

i thought i had reached my final point.

Lp12/T-kable/Adikt/black ash plinth/Trapolin2

cd5i
122x
150x
hicap2
flatcap xs
stageline n
credos
wadia T170i

the power supplies and the LP12 will remain, but i would like to go to 282 and 200 napsc. cd player we are now wondering whether to go for Naim Dac with the iMac. Speakers def need upgrade as things change. I would love to hear some SBLs and try them or Allaes.

Linn could do with decent arm and Lingo or Armageddon

Podium Hifi rack was about £900 and i wouldnt change it for anything, looks beautiful.

MY upgrades are usually every April on my birthday.

To be absolutely honest and be able to look at myself in the mirror, I'd have to say B).

Yet, having gone from:

CDX2/XPS2/HiLine/202/Napsc/HiCap2/200/Naca5/SBLs

to:

CD5/Nait5/Chord Campana/n-Sats

I strangely find that this present, minimal system is finally something I could live with for a long time, hence A). I think it's not a matter of size, quantity or level, but of vintage - I love the 2000/2003 sound.

There's room for a FlatCap2, though, so definitely:

B)

It's always B. The curiosity may lay dormant for years but something always sparks if off again. Having reached a point where I said "OK, that's that" on numerous occasions I know better than to say it again.

A

.....unless/until something breaks before I do.

My CD5, Flatcap 2, 112, 150, NACA5, Piega TS5 system sounds so good in my home that I have stopped listening to the sound. Nowadays I am just enjoying the music.

The kit detailed in my profile fits rather well with my needs at this moment in time but I doubt if it will remaine the same for ever.
