Mains Problem
Posted by: ken c on 02 March 2007
have any of you guys ever had serious problems with mains quality for your hifi? if so, how did you determine this and get the issue resolved. i have 2x10mm radials for my hifi fed from a seperate CU. I have done many tests, switch off circuits, plug to a different ring, different consumer unit, etc -- all to no avail. there is building work in our street (new houses) so i guess that could have something to do with it. i can eliminate my equipment as i have tested with my dealers equipment with the same results.
i would like to hear from people who have gone through this kind of problem and sorted it.

this is a plug for infidelity, kingston, for sticking me with throughout, and being prepared to lend me equipment. Dominic was even prepared to come over to my house and check out a few things.

a plug also for Peter @ Cymbiosis who bent over backwards to help on numerous occasions. i have never met the guy, but he sounds like a good businessman and a gentleman to boot...

Ken-
Have your electric company put a recorder on the line to your house. 3 days or more will be needed. The results will give them the plan of action.

hi Ken
good solution - I read the thread and was just about to suggest you check out your mains earth (with the help of a suitably qualified service person of course) - much of the variability you described is often caused by sub-optimal earth.

Hi Marc,
Many thanks. i might do that sometime -- they have responded to a letter that i wrote to them sometime ago, which is a good sign. but the sound hasnt really deteriorated since a fresh aerial cable was installed -- this sounds like a strong indication that i may have finally located the source of the variability i was suffering.

Hi Rico,
I will get my mains earth checked -- this is a good idea regardless i guess. but think the water-damaged aerial, and possibly pollution os signal earth was the cause of the problem, although there is no way i would have suspected that initially.
perhaps someone can offer some exaplation of what was happening here. it is interesting that the guy which changed the aerial cable seemed to "know" about that the problem -- and he said he wasnt surprised that i was suffering bad performance from my system.
