Picture discs

Posted by: Nigel 66 on 04 February 2009

I recently returned to the pleasures of vinyl replay after a c10 year break, and have now managed to clean up my 500 - 600 neglected LPs.

I'm going to start buying new (& second-hand) LPs and was wondering whether the sound quality of picture discs stood up to the normal black vinyl. Also, what is the best method for storing picture discs ? When I've seen them new and in shops, they all just seem to be in thick, clear plastic wallets, that don't look as if they will accommodate a traditional rice inner sleeve. Is that ok, or is it best to keep them in something like a MoFi or Goldring inner sleeve ?

Apologies if this is a bit of a 'novice' question, but I guess that's what I am !

Thanks for that Munch.

I have been using the MoFi inner sleeves once I've cleaned my records up.

Can I also ask what you opinion is of 180-200gm pressings ? I guess that it depends on the recording, manufacturer, etc. but on the whole do these sound any better than 'normal'vinyl ?

I really cannot see in theory why coloured disc's should sound worse than black vinyl seeing as black vinyl is coloured vinyl. I have some coloured vinyl that is excellent. Classic records have just started using clear vinyl "for best sound quality"

Like Topsy 180/200 gms, when they are good they are very good, and when they are bad.....etc.

Peter Gabriel - So (200) very good.
Blackmore's Night - Secret Voyage (180) a fair amount of surface noises.

BigH, have you heard the EMI 100 centenary pressing? I think it's much better than the Classic Records version.

I absolutely agree with Munch here but whenever I go down to his place we always seem to end up listening to his favourite picture disc Big Grin
