Worst song ever?
Posted by: woodface on 17 February 2003
I think we may have discussed this in the past but it needs to be reappraised! I have just heard that terrible Shania Twain song 'I'm gonna get'cha'. I think this is probably the worst song ever written. Not only are the lyrics truly terrible but it is sung by someone who purports to be a serious artist; if it were sung by some pre-teen wannabe, it perhaps would not annoy quite so much. Anyone who saw Ms Twains appearance on Fame Academy will realise just how seriously this squawker takes herself - she was so far up her own behind that there was a danger of her turning inside-out! So what is the worst song ever? And please ignore all novelty records, I am looking for a title winner that aims for the stars yet treads in sh*t!

It has to be the Pop Stars girls effort, "sounds of the underground" or something like that.
For all the hype it was truely awful.

As already mentioned I was aware that this topic has been raised previously - it was me who initiated the last one! I think an update is required - and please no more novelty records as these are designed to be crap! What I am looking for are releases that are aimed at adults yet connect with chimps! The more I think about the more I despise that Twain girl - even the name grates!

Anything by Posh Spice then, far worse than the Twain Girl!!

Easy target I know, but anything by that talentless smiler, Onan Keating, makes my flesh creep.
There's a lot of dross about but that Cheeky Girls "Grope my Arse" single is pretty dire.

Anything by that Frank Zappa Bloke ... especially songs about yellow snow and the like.
You'd have to be chip to connect with that
On the other hand Middle Of The Road, Boney M and Shania make wonderful Pop music, which you can't help but love

I think we can exempt this on the grounds that they obviously had no intentions of being serious with this one!
"Murphy was an optimist"
Bohemian Rhapsody was recently voted best number one of all time. Need I say any more,

Another classically bad artist that I am pleased has been nominated. That song she did about the homeless! Absolutely terrible lyrics that you can tell she spent ages over and thought they were actually really profound. Don't you just love it when when they go for an older audience?

So does that excuse the rest of their (absolutely awful) canon?

Anyone mentioned Cliff yet??

True, by those early 80s wankers Spandau Ballet.
Come On Eileen by Dexy's Midnight Tosspots comes a close second, IMHO

I can only agree that it must be the self indulgent, capped sleeve twatism, shit video but strangely lauded, you were distinctly unfashionable to like it at the time deeply offensive shite that is Bohemiun Rhapsody.

Seasons in the Sun - any version, any language. Melodramatic dross! An insult to people on death row everywhere.

I'm surprised nobody mentions Roger Whittaker's German songs. Great stuff to wake you up on a Sunday morning.
Cheers,

The Washington Post did a contest a few years back on the worst rock lyrics, and "Tonight's The Night" by Rod Stewart got the nod. I think the line "Let your inhibitions run wild" put him over the top.

Unbelievably no one seems to have mentioned 'Stairway to Heaven', and I don't mean the Rolf Harris version. The song that launched a 1000 power-ballads.
Runs screaming from the room.

I still think that nothing has beaten Twain as yet; remember novelty songs don't count. Seasons in the Sun runs her pretty close though! Don't forget that Shania is not only going to 'getcha' but she is going to 'getcha real good'.

What is the best selling album of the last 16 years???

Well its Shania Twain's Come on Over. So it just goes to show either we are all wrong. Or more likely Gerald Ratner was right in saying that the general public will buy any old crap.
Best Song Ever: Bohemian Rhapsody of course.
What annoys me more than bad songs in general ('cos you just don't listen to them) is bad songs on otherwise good or even great albums. Check out Cream's Disreali Gears for a couple of real stinkers for example.
