humming in one speaker

Posted by: Shayman on 07 January 2002

Hello

Why would my CD3 (just moved between houses 2 weeks ago) have started producing a humming (albeit feint) in one speaker? Close up it is audible in the left but not right speaker. Definitely the CD as it disappears when this component is off and all the others on.

Time for a service? It is getting on a bit. How much does a service usually cost, new parts aside?

Thanks for any advice.

The humming stops when the CD3 is swithed off on the unit and (obviously I suppose) when unplugged from the wall.

My amps are Arcam 8/8P and speakers KEF Q35.

With just the amps on there is a very very feint hiss from the speakers. Turn the CD3 on and the feint hum starts in the left speaker only. It doesnt affect sound quality when listening from usual distance but it just concerned me that there may be a fault with it being just one speaker affected.

I suppose it could be CD power cables touching the left speaker cable. I'll test it tonight.

Also for the purposes of the test switch the two phono plugs round in the amp end and see if the hum switches channels. If so you might want to check the interconnect out.
