J*** from the north (TV documentary)

Posted by: Mika K on 22 March 2010

During the last few weeks one finnish national TV-channel "Yle Teema" have shown this documentary series "Jazzia Pohjoisesta" (Jazz from the north). The series is about the development of northern jazz music and scene, including some speculations of the music educations role in the music culture etc. interesting sidetracks.

Just the other day I watched the third episode and there Juhani Aaltonen was showing some saxophone improvisations with Raoul Björkenheim, really dope stuff.

The home page of the documentary can be found from http://teema.yle.fi/ohjelmat/j...o/jazzia-pohjoisesta

The series is naturally mostly in finnish language even it handles history of the northern jazz and artists all over Scandivania, mostly from Finland, Sweden and Norway.

You can actually see all episodes of the series in the Yle archives in internet. At the moment episodes 1-3 are available and other ones will follow after they are shown on TV first. The episodes can be found behind the following link and I think they can be viewed 12 months after the series is started to be shown on the TV.

If jazz is your cup of tea, please check the documentary out.

Mika - I am well into the first episode one hour of this 7 part series.

This is seriously good - thanks for bringing it to our attention. Although I cannot understand all of it, there is so much to watch and a fair amount in English, I am a little amazed by it. All my favourite music in one program. So far - E.S.T, a lot of Garbarek with various bands including Eberhard Weber. Bobo Stenson. Jon Christensen. Nils Petter Molvaer. Bugge Wesseltoft. Terje Igundset with his ice instruments. NHOP. Arve Henriksen. Manfred Eicher. Interview with Jan Erik Kongshaug at the Rainbow/ECM studio in Oslo - love it when they show all the master tapes of the ECM albums (I see they use big B&W speakers there). Mentions of all the new and up and coming acts that I love.

And the scenery is beautiful.

I have just ordered Jan Johansson - Jazz pa svenska - because of the program - the biggest selling jazz album in swedish history.

This program really needs to be made into an English version for so many others to see.

Cheers

The young E.S.T band at 47/48 mins in is a superb clip.

Thanks for the write-up!

Really nice to hear that the series has something to give also for the enthusiasts outside Scandinavia. I actually have not noticed that there is some english involved also even after watching the first three episodes from the TV.

I think the best parts of the documentary are the ones filmed at the dusty practice halls or at some smoky jazz club somewhere in the middle of nowhere. Seriously well planned and implemented documentary I must say. And I'm very happy to be able to share this with you..

Yesterday evening watched the 7th and last episode of this documentary. The subject of the episode was the integration of the scandinavian jazz music to modern music around the world and also the possible future and development of the jazz.

The episode had some material from E.S.T, The Five Corners Quintet, Rinneradio etc..
