Is rhubarb really that good?
Posted by: Chillkram on 24 March 2008
Or is it completely overrated? After many years in the wilderness, rhubarb seems to be making a comeback. The thing is I think it would have been better if it had stayed as a distant memory. Not everything from the past is necessarily better and rhubarb definitely isn't in my opinion - it conjurs up thoughts of school dinners and lumpy custard. Do you agree with me and are there other things from the past that would be better resurrected (how's that for topical at Easter?!!) or is rhubarb the fruit (?!!) of the moment?
And whatever happened to white dog poo?

Used to eat it raw. The best way to eat it is to dip the end that you are biting into sugar.

Rhubarb's one of those things you either love or hate.
I LOVE it! Rhubarb Crumble's very fine. Dead easy to grow Rhubarb too!
I confess I didn't realise it'd ever fallen out of fashion.

rhubarb holds a special place in the canon of food stuffs to be avoided for me, along with brains, hearts, bread and butter pudding, bananas and aubergines.

Everything you need to know about forcing rhubarb was covered in this thread.

no better way to ruin a strawberry than to pair it with rhubarb.

Rhubarb also cleans ali saucepans really well too. Not sure what it does to your insides therefore?

For me rhubarb should have been left firmly in the past along with blancmange, coffee with chicory, Vesta curries, soggy vegetables, Smash potato, Bird's Angel Delight, power cuts (could make a comeback actually!), brown cars, vinyl wallpaper, liebfraumilch, Waltham music centres and footballers with perms.

Rhubarb in a well made tart or crumble - oh yes!
Gooseberries & Blackcurrants are also types of overlooked & brilliant fruit!
Best of all when home grown IMHO, which we do at 555 acres along with other fruit & veg'.
It involves some hard work, but I find I have no sense of guilt relaxing in a listening session after some work in the greenhouse/garden.

Why do people persisit with calling rhubarb a fruit?
It isn't it is an ugly weed that someone discovered had a semi edible stalk and a deadly poisonous leaf.

Next thing we shall be buying £3000 + PSU to stick somewhere.

The genus is in the family Polygonaceae, and includes the vegetable rhubarb (Rheum rhabarbarum or Rheum x hybridum.)
Now you know.

I s'pose people will stop calling rhubarb a fruit at the same time that they stop calling tomato a vegetable.
