Sight and Sound in Concert
Posted by: DIL on 06 June 2005
Seeing on bbc.co.uk that Coldplay will be braodcast 'live in concert' got me thinking about the BBC's 'sight and sound in concert' from the early 1970's (?). The concept was audio via that new fangled medium of stereo radio, images via the telly. Unfortunately, I have no lasting memories of who featured, or when or, for that matter, why, more than (I think) that the S+S concerts were broadcast on an ad hoc basis, maybe to coincide with live events.
Can anyone add in more details or have lasting memories. (Ones one would wish to share on the forum at least

).

Van Morrison was an early one. I also remember watching Jethro Tull live in the US which was, I believe the first Transatlantic simulcast.

The 'Sounds of the 70's' series now being repeated on BBC4 has many live clips of artists from this period. Probaly some are from S&S.

This jogged the memory banks. Remember listening to this in the seventies as a kid on a Saturday night, and how hi-tech the simultaneous broadcast seemed at the time. My older brother used to tape it using a wee Panasonic recorder placed in front of the speaker of our “Radiogram” – we always had to be quiet during this process, difficult when you’re eight years old!
I bet the (craply-recorded) tapes are still in his attic somewhere.
From memory -
Steve Gibbons Band
Colosseum II (featuring Gary Moore, would this be right?)
Gentle Giant – this was our favourite.
The Strawbs
And maybe Horslips (Irish folky/mystical stuff?) too, not sure.
Have to ask him if he recalls any more.
Kev.

I remember that Thin Lizzy did one in 1983 on their farewell tour. Pete Drummond introduced them as I recall.
Best regards,

AC/DC were another ... a late replacement for The Sensational Alex Harvey Band . I seem to recall someone in the crowd shouting " bring back Alex "
Perhaps a bit too much " music to sweat by " as a mate of mine described AC/DC to my uninitiated younger self.

If memory serves - XTC, The Specials (a cracking version of Monkey Man), Dr. Feelgood. I think this would be late 70s / early 80s. Australian band, something like April Wine - can't really remember, probably too much shandy

Aaah the joys of two different commentations, one on tv and the other on radio 2.
Others that I can remember:
Gallager and Lyle
Split Endz (poss Australian band Huwge?)
ELO??
I'm sure will bust back into my tired grey matter soon.
