MFSL CD'S

Posted by: Right Wing on 10 May 2007

I recently bought SD Gaucho on mfsl for about £25 on ebay, I am wondering if anyone else has this and any other albums on mfsl.

I have a few other copies of gaucho but I do not really like the sound quality, the remaster is very tiring - I am hoping that the mfsl version will be better?

Can anyone recommend any other titles on mfsl?

Regards

Hi,

Yes indeed. The point I was making with the Allman Bros live is that the original CD issue was pants. The remaster (US) is really very good it cost me about $10 I think.

If I thought there were super pressings that polished turds like U2 recordings etc. I'd be up for them. Too often though, these releases seem to cover albums that are pretty good pressing anyway. In which case, you pay a lot for not much improvement.

Careful selection of normal pressings can get you good results for a lot less if you can be arsed to import them.

Usually less than £18's worth in the UK if you want to avoid the customs crap.

Steve

Can't argue with you there Steve. One thing I will add though I dislike is some of the remasters that come out because of the tacking of extra trax on to the end of the original disc. Sometimes they are fine but in a lot of occasions they are just c**p.

Bloody hell!
I think I'll hang on very tight to this lot then!
I also have a number of Rykodisc AU20 gold Cds, mostly Zappa and Bowie. Maybe they are as collectable? they all have limited edition numbers.

Thanks Ewemon.

Think the Ryko Bowies will become very collectable. I see ebay shop prices are about £20-£30 a disc. So private auctions are usually a little less but hold on to them. I see one site has Sound and Vision box set up for approx £60.

Any you want to give away to a charitable cause namely me?

An interesting thought....but no thanks! I shall investigate the values of these collectibles though. Hadn't really thought about their worth before.

I've just been to the MFSL web-site and ordered Marc Cohn's (eponymous) first album and 'Fragile' by Yes on Ultradisc II Gold CDs.

Not bad at $25 each, but I suspect that I'll get hit for customs duty and VAT.

I'm afraid you probably will. Everything I order from the US now seems to get clobbered, but especially Amazon stuff, so you might get lucky. I thing HM C&E have woken up to the cash cow tha is the internet!

I already have a copy of the Marc Cohn. IMHO it is better than the original. Cleaner, better seperation, more detailed but the one thing that worries me is that it is louder. I will get around to doing a spectral analysis of both discs that will tell me what has changed.

Next issue is The Pixies.

Just ordered my copy as well John. Hope they don't sell out. Anyone know where I can get a copy of Pink Floyd "The Wall". It seems on MFSL it's out of print?

Hi Steve,

The limit is £18 worth of goods. I did consider making two separate orders, but couldn't be arsed. The 'one package' option should at least cost less in postage.

John.

jim there are a few MFSL Cds of the Wall on e-ebay ATM.

Jim see my note above about a recent price for The Wall. I think you would be better off not going for one. Look for a early Japanese disc on eBay.

Hi
Why not download them to try first, there are loads of them on the torrent sites in lossless form.
Also try DCC recordings as well, I prefer them to MFSL.

I've got a few DCC discs too. Pet Sounds, CCR Chronicles Vols 1&2 spring to mind. They sound pretty good.

By the way, thanks for starting this thread. It has prompted me to start playing through them all again. Currently "Eat a peach": sounds bloody good.

No problem Chris -

I have bought half a dozen MFSL cd's since starting the thread, only gaucho has arrived so far.

One disk I am looking forward to getting is actually on DCC - 'Elvis is back' this has (what I hope to be) some of the best recorded stuff he ever did. I heard it once at a HiFi show, the track 'Fever' was played, I have never heard elvis like that before, so I cant wait to spin it at home.

Will post a report soon.

These are also fetching high prices at the moment. I have seen the CCR 's go for £40 plus so hold on to them. I have both of the Jackson Browne's plus a few others.

Yeah, I have the Pretender now that you mention it!

I have Procol Harum's Salty Dog, Home and Broken Barricades on MFSL - all amazing, much more natural-sounding than the normal releases. Ditto XTC's Skylarking, Oranges & Lemons and the "classic seven" Moody Blues albums.

A great label.

I wish MFSL (or better yet - persuade Apple/EMI to hire Steve Hoffman) could remaster all the Beatles' albums on Ultradisc Gold CDs....

Yeah I would agree with you re a lot of Steves work but I have 2 discs of his and Kevin Gray that I don't rate very highly. One is Whos Next where he put the emphasis on the vocals. IMHO opinion the dlx is better.

also

He and Kevin did the SACD CCR discs of which I find Green River to sound a little flat. It is the cleanest copy I have heard but there is something missing from the disc. Maybe I am expecting too much

The SACD discs are of a different mix than the DCC versions he did of the same title.

Other than those 2 I love his work and I have quite a number of his discs as well as being a member on his forum..

Ah, different strokes. I love Steve's Who's Next, the DeLuxe version sounds like it was goosed in the treble area. But, if I hadn't got Steve's version I'd be fine with the Astley version. My general taste in remasters runs to a "flat transfer" of the mastertapes; if e.q. must be applied, then something to bring out the vocal/guitar area.

Yeah at least we can disagree politely and of course it horses for courses. One thing of course the only copy I have of Steves Whos Next is the Canandian edition. So I was basing my impressions on that. Is it a copy of the US edition you have?

I remember Whos Next (Steves version) came up in another thread and one of the other members here absolutely slated it. I thought he was a bit too strong in his opinion as it isn't as bad as all that.

I used to work in the music biz many moons ago and we used to always say at the time that whilst the UK and Euroland liked to have more bass the US liked cleaner trebles.

I actually had 2 versions of the Who dlx. The US one and a European one. The US copy was a lot more cleaner and didn't have a sizzle (or boost)in the treble. Maybe there was different masters used for each production run in the States. I just sold the Euro version a couple of days ago as it was just an earbleeder to me. I ran some EAC logs on them and they turned out exactly the same loudness wise.

I also like flat transfers but if someone applies any eq it will always be a matter of personal taste in so much as what they would like the disc to sound like and of course what we would like the disc to sound like.

That might have been me. It is rubbish.

MFSL The Wall is a wonderful cd and becoming increasingly hard to find sealed. I paid over $200 five years ago for my sealed longbox version and I thought I was mad, but $589!

I of course dumped the long box as soon as I got back to my hotel from Peaches Records. Doh.
