MFSL CD'S

Posted by: Right Wing on 10 May 2007

I recently bought SD Gaucho on mfsl for about £25 on ebay, I am wondering if anyone else has this and any other albums on mfsl.

I have a few other copies of gaucho but I do not really like the sound quality, the remaster is very tiring - I am hoping that the mfsl version will be better?

Can anyone recommend any other titles on mfsl?

Regards

But who, I wonder, bought CDs in the early to mid90's with a view to not even opening the long boxes? Not me, for sure! The bloody long boxes in the US were a real pain. I bought a good few albums every trip and there were space in the case issues and a desire not to ctach the yes of the guys in the green channel when getting back to London!

Ewemon -

If The standard Allmans live at the filmore was say 5 / 10 for sound quality, what would the remastered, japanese version, and the mfsl be.

I would really appreciate your thoughts.

Thanks

Can't say re the Japanese version. IMHO the MFSL would be about an 8 and the remaster dlx would be a bout a 6.5. But as I always say let your ears do the walking. A lot of folk think the MFSL is the best version.

Thanks for that, I guess what you say is what I was hoping for, I will just go for a mfsl one then (is there just one on mfsl?), if I dont like it I am sure I can sell it on at not much loss . . .

Thanks

There is 3 Allman Bros discs on MFSL. Eat a Peach, Fillmore and Brothers and Sisters. If that is what you are meaning.

If you want Eat a Peach then buy the dlx it is excellent. Bros and Sisters from what some people say is not worth buying on MFSL as the Dennis Drake capricorn original release is the best version.

One thing remember with the dlx version of Fillmore you get what is a complete Allman Bros set from the Fillmore dates. There are 13 trax on the dlx and only 7 on the MFSL.

With the MFSL you get the original single disc. The dlx has some of the live trax from Eat a Peach that were taken from the series of March '71 concerts that the Allman Brothers played at the Fillmore.

Remember if you buy it get it off of Amazon US as it may work out cheaper for you. than an eBay auction.

Ah, different strokes. I love Steve's Who's Next, the DeLuxe version sounds like it was goosed in the treble area. But, if I hadn't got Steve's version I'd be fine with the Astley version. My general taste in remasters runs to a "flat transfer" of the mastertapes; if e.q. must be applied, then something to bring out the vocal/guitar area.

Yeah at least we can disagree politely and of course it horses for courses. One thing of course the only copy I have of Steves Whos Next is the Canandian edition. So I was basing my impressions on that. Is it a copy of the US edition you have?

I remember Whos Next (Steves version) came up in another thread and one of the other members here absolutely slated it. I thought he was a bit too strong in his opinion as it isn't as bad as all that.

I used to work in the music biz many moons ago and we used to always say at the time that whilst the UK and Euroland liked to have more bass the US liked cleaner trebles.

I actually had 2 versions of the Who dlx. The US one and a European one. The US copy was a lot more cleaner and didn't have a sizzle (or boost)in the treble. Maybe there was different masters used for each production run in the States. I just sold the Euro version a couple of days ago as it was just an earbleeder to me. I ran some EAC logs on them and they turned out exactly the same loudness wise.

I also like flat transfers but if someone applies any eq it will always be a matter of personal taste in so much as what they would like the disc to sound like and of course what we would like the disc to sound like.

I have the Canadian (Steve Hoffman's) Who's Next; unlike many of these "holy grail" CDs, you can still get it new for less than ten bucks. What you said about the U.S. version of the DeLuxe edition intrigues me...interesting also what you said about U.S. vs. U.K./E.U. listeners; it's been my impression that here in the West Coast, everyone is obsessed with "big bottom". Subwoofers every-freakin'-where. Slow bloat to nowhere, ha ha.

Many people think they like the sort of modern re-mastered CD of a given old classic album; that is, until they get hi-res audio kit - then they discover how ear-bleedingly bright some of them are.Frown

The engineers must do this to get detail to cut through on cheapo shelf systems, boomboxes or whatever. It's enough to make me wish my Nait had a treble knob. I had to go through four different versions of Procol Harum's Grand Hotel to find one that hadn't been diabolically futzed-with, e.q.-wise; ironically, it turned out to be the one I owned originally (before I got Rega, and later Naim, gear); the Chrysalis CD from 1990 or so. My CD5X is able to dig out all sorts of information and groove on it that my old Rotel CDP just wasn't able to.

Anyway (and back to the thread already in progress), I've never heard an "earbleeder" MFSL CD! And I've gotta mention some other Steve Hoffman-mastered CDs I've got: Buddy Holly From The Original Master Tapes (MCA); ELO Eldorado (DCC); and Badfinger Straight Up, (DCC) that I paid $80 for (I missed it when it first came out); it was worth it though, living breathing music. Not claustrophobically NoNoised like the Apple/EMI issue.

I have about 30 MFSL and DCC CDs, some of which I found about six months ago in a CD store in NY that didn't know what they had and set em out at bargain bin prices. Go figure. I keep going back there to see if they have more.

Of these I really like Innervisions, Honky Chateau and REM Murmur and Who Quadrophenia.

I also have a number of vinyl MFSLs some of which are really too bright for my taste, especially Sticky Fingers. The sax/horns sound like razors to my ears. Maybe my rega p3/nait 5 combo just cant handle it?

Supposed to coming out in either June or July. MOFI are notoriously difficult to pin down when it comes to release dates. I will be pre- ordering a copy.

I posted something re this in the What are you listening to thread in answer to your MFSL Allman Brothers post. You should have a look as I think you may get a laugh.

Lol - I cant believe you bid on that too -I thought you already had a copy Winker - No wonder the prices are high if people are wanting several copies!

I woke in the morning quite suprised that i'd won it at a lowish price - I had bidded about $100 I think. - it should arrive next week.

Good ones so far that I have bought include

Joe Cocker 'Sheffield Steel' - Really good.
Elvis is back - DCC, which is superb, I am now after the greatest hits on DCC.

I am quite excited about these Little Feat remasters, I really hope they are good.

Do let me know what you think - you will probably get yours before me.

I have placed an order with that chap on ebay for the latest allmans to appear on MFSL too.

I had a copy of the MFSL Allmans but some b*****d nicked it. But I have a friend who has one and thats what I compared the other discs to.

I haven't placed my order yet for the Idlewild. I am watching an auction for something really rare that may hit £100 tonight but it is going quite cheap at the moment at about £30.

It is Memorial weekend in the US and it is apparently not a good time to sell anything.

I have just watched a Beatles MFSL Abbey Road disc go for £40. That is cheap as I haven't seen one on ebay for a long time and it is extremely rare.

Remember if you don't like the Allman- Fillmore MFSL I will take it off your hands.

Checking out MoFi's site they have Blood Sweat & Tears II & III. About the best sounding rock albums ever made, IMO. Very tempted.

Thanks for that. There are 2 MFSL recordings on there but they are a little expensive at around £75!!
The album is fantastic but a bit too much to pay I think. Very disapointing.

Apparently the best version of the second disc is the original MFSL gold disc. Though I can't say as I have never heard it.

You could also try this link.

Getting it brand new would cost you an absolute fortune.

I bought a Black Triangle Japanese copy of Dark Side of the Moon 1st pressing. It all depends on the matrix no. on the disc and its inner ring.

The problem sometimes with something this rarish if you ask the seller a question on ebay he sometimes posts the answer and that alerts other people to the auction.

Not the "Holy Grail" japanese disc as they call it but possibly the 2nd best version about. Supposedly better than the MFSL disc.

Paid £39 which is cheap for a BT copy. I have seen copies go for £200.

I have never heard the Holy Grail version but people who I respect say that Floyd are in the room with you- it is that good.

I will let you know how I got on with mine.

I am afraid I have just re-read my post re Arc and you would think I wanted to sell it unfortunatley I don't. Sorry Jim but hope the link I sent you enabled you to get one.

One tip and this could cost me, for all you MFSL hunters is look at Amazon.fr and Aamazon.de as everyone misses them out and only looks at the US site. Sometimes you can pick up really good bargains from them. Some folk I know shop with Amazon.hk but have never done it myself.

To be honest right wing there is no current MFSL's or IMHO the better DCC discs I have that I would sell. I have a list I am working from that I am currently buying. The Allmans amongst them to get another copy.

I like very much my collection of DCC and MFSL golden CDs. I think some sound superb, then other ones like the Who s Quadropenia, sounds too muffled in my opinion, then I prefer the remaster.
Is anyone having the Gold Anniversary Edition of Neil Young. Its a little Box containing Harvest and Harvest moon, released from Warner Australia. I like that.
