Dave Allen Dead

Sadder for me than Tommy Vance I'm afraid.
His humour was part of my growing up.
Perhaps there is a god after all, even despite all the drinking, I would not have expected the pope to outlive Dave Allen.
And how things can change in fifteen short years:
(from the Guardian)
"His superb storytelling ability ensured that he remained on TV screens until recent years. Between 1981 and 1990, he made two series, simply entitled Dave Allen, for the BBC, and one for ITV in 1993-94. His use of the word "fuck" on air in 1990 prompted the BBC to issue a public apology and MPs to ask questions about him in the Commons."
R.I.P.

Yes, sad indeed.
I doubt he would have been allowed to flourish had he just been starting his showbiz career in these times. The PC brigade would have seen to that.

Another sad loss

Sad he's gone, I just hope some of his shows now get repeated. Apparently he refused his programmes being repeated once they'd been aired - strange considering how good they were!

He was a Catholic and Irish so why shouldn't he poke fun at the hypocrisy and absurdity of the former and the endearing traits of the latter.
A sad loss indeed.

No.
This cannot be.
He was a genius.
Still cannot believe this.

When my mum first bought a TV that was able to get BBC2 way back when I was a young kid, it seemed only Dave Allen, Pot Black & The Old Grey Whistle Test were on. I grew up with Dave Allen on the box. I'm very sorry he's gone. He was a one-off.
A really great loss.

I always liked his sign-off "May your god go with you". I don't have one but I trust his has a good sense of humour! He always had me in stitches.
Martin
PS Graham, why not just shut up for once if you've nothing to say?

When I joined my golf club a couple of years back, I was struggling with people's names, but the name of the vice captain was easy due to image association - I just thought of the missing finger and immediately got Dave Allen.
I am sad about his passing.
To quote him;
"Am I the Irish comedian with half a finger? No, I'm the Irish comedian with nine and a half fingers."

I was suprised over 25 years ago on my travels in Norway to find that he was the most poppular thing on tv (in English too), being a mainly Catholic Country I see/saw their attraction to him, I wonder if the Pope will be saying a mass for him ?
Fritz Von May your God go with you As I have also ended many of my own posts with in the past to no comment whatso'ever, and as your above comment demonstrates you yourself seriously require men of humour to compensate for your obvious lack of it, as well as jumping on the usual padded cell emotional bandwagon, so nothing new there then, innit.

'Tis sad indeed, as he was apparently thinking of working on new material.
Strangely, in that recent C4 list of the Comedians' Comedians (the one topped by Peter Cook), Allen didn't feature at all...

In case anyone is reading this thread, Radio 4 are doing a half-hour tribute to him tonight (Sun) at 20:30. Should be available online, I would imagine.

I believe Dave Allen commenced his career in Australia. At least this would appear to be where he first appeared on television.
He was always a little outrageous and earnt the ire of the regulators by using the word masturbate in primetime. I believe few Australians knew what he was talking about, or pretended not to know, that was a big word in those days. He chuckled about this in an interview about his earlier years.
Dave was very popular here but like most comedians he had a useby date to all but his most ardent fans. It must be extremely difficult to come up with new material week after week and television is a hard task master.
In the week before his death I noticed DVDS of his shows being promoted along with other leading comedians of his era.
He earnt tremendous respect among his peers and what a great mane of hair. Vale Dave Allen.
