52 & Phono boards

Hi
I've just bought a second-hand 52, which came with NA526/1 boards on the BNC connector, from tomtom audio. James swapped these for the K boards in my 82. As an experiment, I've just removed the K boards. The improvement is only marginal. Should I re-insert the 526 boards? While I had the 52 apart, I also noticed that the main PCB's had nothing where Input 5 and Input 6 were written. Should there be two boards here, and does it matter anyway (if I'm not going to use them)?
