Upgrade existing Naim system to Home Theatre

Posted by: saillandc on 15 February 2006

Hello,

I would need some advice on how to convert the following Naim system (CDX2, 90/72/Hicap, Nat02, Epos 14) to a stereo/home theatre system. Do I have to update the 90/72 or can they be used with an Nvi or other ?

Thanks for your help

Hi there, you can take the front left/right preouts of any surround amp (including n-Vi) and plug them into a free input on your 72. Then set the 72 to an obvious high place on the volume dial (12 o'clock is usual) and setup the surround system. Whenever you want to play the surround system, simply switch over the 72 to that input and set the volume to 12 o'clock. Use the surround amp as the master volume control. Remember to set the volume low again after watching otherwise you will get an ear blasting when you come to play your tuner or CD player.

Thanks for your reply Frank. Just to make sure I understand correctly, the stereo speaker cable would still be connected to the Naim part but let say a Denon AVR would be connected to the pre amp ? Is there a Naim pre-amp which allow this without requiring the volume dial trick ?

Hi:
I believe the newer preamps (202, 282, 252, 552) allow you to do this on the AV input without adjusting the volume control (the unity gain feature).

That's right.

Connect the Denon to a spare input, let's say AUX. When you set the signal levels up on your Denon for surround set your 72's volume to something like 12:00. Something you will remember. Whenever you use the Denon reset the volume to 12:00.

Michael aludes to the newer pre's which enable you to set an input up as a unity gain input. Basically the signal bypasses the volume on the pre.

Ask naim, you may be able to get them to mod your 90 to give it unity gain. They did it with my 102
